That is, IMHO, a somewhat misguided argument- no matter how good or how bad the standard of ANY sporting competition might be, it's still worth supporting sport at grassroots level because without it you'll have nothing. No matter how low a level of competition it might be, you have got to give it a fair chance and players have got to give it their all.
And whilst many countries, especially Australia, has its best players playing abroad the same can't be said of many other countries who have many if not most of their star players still in their local comps. That WAS the case in most of the world until recent times, in the same way that the SANFL and WAFL were blessed with some of the best footy talent ever seen at one time (prior to the exodus starting in the 80s).
