ADELAIDE is battling Perth to host the Socceroos in one of only two matches they will play in Australia before next year's World Cup finals in Germany.

The Advertiser wants your vote of confidence to lure Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, coach "Aussie" Guus Hiddink and South Australians John Aloisi and Tony Vidmar to Adelaide in March.

The Socceroos will play a preliminary round of the 2007 Asian Cup on Wednesday, March 1 in Australia.

Hindmarsh Stadium is in competition with Perth's Members Equity Stadium to stage the match.

Hosting the Socceroos will cost the State Government about $1.5 million.

"Hindmarsh is the best football stadium in Australia," Socceroos assistant coach Graham Arnold said yesterday. "It has a great surface, the crowd is close to the action and the facilities are first class.

"The only negative was that last year when we were there the crowds were disappointing. I think the boys deserve a lot more than that if we come next year."

The Socceroos' only other match in Australia before the finals is likely to be against 2004 European champion Greece at Sydney's Telstra Stadium in May.

The Advertiser is compiling a petition for fans wanting the Asian Cup qualifier game here. That will be sent to the Football Federation of Australia. To be added to it, send an email to mailto:sport@adv.newsltd.com.au with your full name and suburb and "I want the Socceroos in Adelaide" in the subject line.

Office for Recreation and Sport Minister Michael Wright said he was working towards an Adelaide Socceroos' appearance.

"I've already written to the FFA's John O'Neill promoting South Australia as the ideal place to host an international game involving the Socceroos," he said.

Of course we should have the Aussies play here. Although it would be good to play it at Hindmarsh because it's a soccer pitch, I think that it could possibly be played at AAMI. Why, because more people can go, but you can't drink a beer in your seat.

it will never be at footy park, footy park is crap, and would turn people away from the sport, it will be at Adelaide Oval if its not @ Hindmarsh, and alot of the idea to get the game to Adelaide is based on the fact that Hindmarsh is such a great ground.

I'm not saying that Hindmarsh isn't a great ground, I'm just thinking about the number of people who might want to go to the game. How about if there is 40-45 000 people want to go to the game, that's basically 3 times the size of people who can fit in to Hindmarsh. It's all about the numbers.

Have it at Hindmarsh, perhaps give Adelaide United and/or Soccer Club members the first pic of tickets.
Would be an awesome atmosphere.
Best sporting ground in Australia to watch sport at IMHO.
I miss going there, I look forward to a NRL game being there one day again.

you could have gone and watched the Bling lose last week.
no other A-leauge ground comes close to Hindmarsh, you are jsut so close to the play its unbeliveble, you jsut would not get that at footy park or Adelaide oval, but of thsoe to Adelaide oval would be the best pick.
keep in mind the ground SA is up against in Perth dosent overly hold that many people either.

With all the excitement surrounding the Socceroos at the moment, AAMI isn't big enough....! And isn't that great for the WORLD GAME, AUSTRALIA and SOCCER....!

A packed Hindmarsh is the way to go. Sam sums it up best when he points out how close to the play you are there - it creates a cracking atmosphere.

Those people must be HUGE!
