Postby RB » Wed Jun 19, 2024 8:08 pm

The draw for the Round of 32 for the Australia Cup for 2024 has been conducted.

Adelaide's north east is once again well-represented, with Campbelltown City making a trip to Queensland and high-flying Modbury Jets travelling to Melbourne to take on a team at the fourth level of the Australian soccer pyramid. Adelaide United travel to take on Blacktown City.

The all-A-League match-up is:
Brisbane/Perth v Melbourne City

The A-League-local club matches are:
Rockdale Ilinden (NSW) v Newcastle Utd./Western
Blacktown City (NSW) v Adelaide United
O'Connor Knights (ACT) v Macarthur
Brisbane City v Western Sydney
Oakleigh (Vic.) v Sydney
Heidelberg Utd. (Vic.) v Central Coast
South Melbourne v Wellington
Lambton Jaffas (Nth. NSW) v Melbourne Victory

The all-local club matches are:
Moreton City (Qld.) v Campbelltown City (SA)
Northern Spirit (NSW) v Glenorchy (Tas.)
Perth Redstar v Brisbane Lions
Melbourne Serbia* v Modbury Jets (SA)
Brisbane Olympic v APIA Leichhardt (NSW)
Olympic Kingsway (WA) v Edgeworth (Nth. NSW)
Darwin Hearts v Hume City (Vic.)

* from the third tier in state soccer

The playoffs for a spot in the Round of 32 between Brisbane and Perth, and Newcastle Utd. and Western, will be played in Darwin next month.

The Round of 32 will be played in late-July/early August.

Campbelltown City unfortunately fell on the first night of Round of 32 action for this year, shipping five goals in Brisbane in a relatively even game despite the scoreline, with City even shading the possession stakes.

Meanwhile, we have the first giant killing of 2024, with Sydney going down, for the second time, to Oakleigh.

Moreton City (Qld.) 5-1 Campbelltown City (SA) - crowd 869
Oakleigh (Vic.) 3-1 Sydney - crowd 1,200
O'Connor Knights (ACT) 1-2 Macarthur - crowd 3,060
Darwin Hearts 0-6 Hume City (Vic.) - crowd 1,443

Adelaide United are in action at 7.00 p.m. SA time tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

Adelaide United got through to the Round of 16 narrowly, prevailing in extra time against state league opposition at this stage of the competition for the third time in four years. Hard to get very excited about anyone's overall performance, admittedly on the unfamiliar artificial turf, although there were a couple of highlights.

Last night's results:
Blacktown City (NSW) 2-3 Adelaide United (AET) - crowd 1,531
Brisbane City 1-2 Western Sydney - crowd 1,794
Rockdale Ilinden (NSW) 1-2 Newcastle Utd. - crowd 1,979
Perth Redstar 1-4 Brisbane Lions - crowd 616

The first all-A-League match-up, Perth v Melbourne City, takes place on Saturday, before the Round of 32 continues on Tuesday, including Modbury Jets in action in Melbourne.

A rare bad Round of 32 for South Australian teams, with Modbury being upset by Melbourne Serbia after the match went to a penalty shootout. Wellington become the first A-League side to lose to state league opposition in the Australia Cup for the third time, going down to South Melbourne.

Perth 5-4 Melbourne City (AET) - crowd 2,015
Lambton Jaffas (Nth. NSW) 1-4 Melbourne Victory - crowd 1,172
South Melbourne 1-0 Wellington - crowd 4,196
Melbourne Serbia* 1-1 Modbury Jets (SA) (AET - Melbourne Serbia won 4-1 on pens) - crowd 1,069
Olympic Kingsway (WA) 4-1 Edgeworth (Nth. NSW) - crowd 1,405

* from the third tier in state soccer

The Round of 32 concludes tomorrow night.

The Mariners join Wellington in having lost three times in the Australia Cup to state league opposition, the Bergers prevailing in a massive upset. The final Round of 32 matches were:

Heidelberg Utd. (Vic.) 3-1 Central Coast (AET) - crowd 2,077
Brisbane Olympic 1-0 APIA Leichhardt (NSW) (AET) - crowd 1,400
Northern Spirit (NSW) 3-0 Glenorchy (Tas.) - crowd 510

The draw for the remainder of the tournament is as follows (with winners of adjacent Round of 16 matches playing each other in the quarters, etc.):

Newcastle Utd. v Macarthur
Oakleigh (Vic.) v Heidelberg Utd. (Vic.)
Hume City (Vic.) v Melbourne Serbia*
South Melbourne v Brisbane Olympic
Northern Spirit (NSW) v Melbourne Victory
Moreton City (Qld.) v Perth
Olympic Kingsway (WA) v Adelaide United
Brisbane Lions v Western Sydney

* from the third tier in state soccer

This means that if A-League teams were to win all their matches (by no means a given - this season is the first time that three separate state league clubs have upset professional opposition), then Adelaide United would face Western Sydney in the quarters, with the winner of that to take on the winner of Melbourne Victory and Perth in the semis, with the Jets and Bulls in the other half of the draw.

The Round of 16 kicked off yesterday.

Macarthur's win over the Jets in Maitland means they're probably favourites to make the Final as the only remaining A-League outfit in their half of the draw.

Meanwhile South Melbourne finally prevailed over Olympic about three and a half hours after their match got under way in rainy Melbourne. Lightning strikes in the first half halted play for a long time, and Olympic looked set to progress once things resumed until South were awarded a late penalty. The spot kick was saved, but a few minutes later in stoppage time, South finally had their equaliser, before bagging a winner at the start of extra time by way of a Ronaldinho/Seaman-esque long-range lob free kick.

Newcastle Utd. 3-4 Macarthur - crowd 2,971
South Melbourne 3-2 Brisbane Olympic (AET) - crowd 2,572

Adelaide United play their match tomorrow (Tuesday) at 8.00 p.m. SA time.

Well the Reds are through, albeit in extremely unconvincing fashion against an Olympic Kingsway side who created more opportunities albeit with far, far less possession. Liam Boland of Olympic has become the all-time leading scoring in FFA/Australia Cup final rounds matches with 13, which is impressive given they've come in only 10 matches, Boland only having played two matches at the quarter final stage and none beyond, and entirely for state league clubs.

Hume City (Vic.) 1-0 Melbourne Serbia* - crowd 3,163
Olympic Kingsway (WA) 2-3 Adelaide United - crowd 1,950
Brisbane Lions 0-4 Western Sydney - crowd 1,853

* from the third tier in state soccer

Adelaide United will play Wanderers in Adelaide in the quarter final, hopefully anywhere but the dunghill at Gepps X.

The Round of 16 concluded last night, with Moreton City coming from 2-0 down to prevail against 10-man Perth Glory the highlight. The is the first time there have been four 'cupsets' in one edition of the Australia Cup.

It was a game of penalties in Melbourne as Oakleigh missed a penalty in the first half, finally took the lead in the second half before Heidelberg equalised late from the spot, then won through to the next round following a penalty shootout with scores level after extra time.

Oakleigh (Vic.) 1-1 Heidelberg Utd. (Vic.) (AET - Oakleigh won 4-1 on pens) - crowd 1,500
Northern Spirit (NSW) 0-4 Melbourne Victory - crowd 1,854
Moreton City (Qld.) 3-2 Perth - crowd 1,490

The quarter final match-ups are:

Oakleigh (Vic.) v Macarthur
Hume City (Vic.) v South Melbourne
Moreton City (Qld.) v Melbourne Victory
Adelaide United v Western Sydney

And we're playing at the dunghill at Gepps X. Thursday at 7 p.m. as well, great timing when much of the Adelaide soccer community has training. Bizarre that it's not on the weekend. Tickets available here:

And then there were four. United did it tough, again in extra time, against an understrength Western Sydney, although I think their performance in midfield, in particular, was improved on earlier rounds.

The quarter final results were:

Hume City (Vic.) 2-3 South Melbourne (AET) - crowd 1,758
Adelaide United 2-1 Western Sydney (AET) - crowd 2,906
Oakleigh (Vic.) 0-1 Macarthur - crowd 807
Moreton City (Qld.) 0-4 Melbourne Victory - crowd 1,850

The semi final match-ups are:

Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United (7 p.m. SA time this Saturday)
South Melbourne v Macarthur (5.30 p.m. SA time this Sunday)

A disappointing loss for United at the penultimate stage, with Victory a chance now to go level with us on three Australia Cups. Macarthur got over South Melbourne via a late penalty, although their playmaker Valère Germain stupidly got himself sent off for a second yellow at the end of the game so will miss the final. Victory therefore will start big favourites. Qualification in the Asian Champions League 2 (previously known as the AFC Cup) for 2025-26 goes to the winner.

The semi final results were:

Melbourne Victory 1-0 Adelaide United - crowd 5,131
South Melbourne 0-1 Macarthur - crowd 4,138

The final will be held this Sunday at 6.40 p.m. Adelaide time, screened live on 10 Bold.
