ACL spots

will be announced tonight.
Melbourne are having a whinge, even though they havent won anything yet and could still miss the finals, they are challenging for Sydney FC's spot, Adelaide seems the only team certain to fill a spot, but Sydney will more than likely get the 2nd spot.

It should go to whoever comes 1st and 2nd in the current season (or at the very least the stupid recognition of the minor premier and real champion if they differ).
Its farcial that in May next year someone who performed in a season that commenced 20 months earlier. In Adelaide's case they couldn't even make the GF in the season that commenced 20 months earlier.
Hopefully the Asians let Australia just nominate Oz Team 1 and Oze Team 2 until its decided early next year.

Its Unlikley, it should just be from the previous season, so say MV win the premierhsip this year and Queensland win the Championship, then they go in for 2008, otherwise this issue is going to come up every year.

Exactly its going to be equally ridiculuos each year unless its fixed now, I understand FFA are looking at bringing the season forward to fit in better with the ACL.
If that's the case you could have 2005/06 champions/premiers playing in the 2007 ACL and the 2007/2008 playing in the 2008 ACL with this season's teams missing completely.

The stupidest part of the current set up is that if New Zealand won the championship (yeah I know, drawing a long bow there) they couldn't enter their team in the ACL as they're a part of Oceania still.

I dont know that that would come into it, as they have no direct link with FFNZ (or whatever its called there) which is probably half their problem.

and other things like the possibility having the Austrlian Domestic GF in NZ.

there is abit of a push to have them kicked out, or relocated to Canberra or somewhere, except the FFA has given them their backing for a minimum 5 years, there crowd average is somthing like 3000 (if that) yet the league average is around 13,000.

Its actually a fact and was laid out when the Asia thing first happened, they definately can't play in the ACL.
But as you eluded to, it would never happen, they're a blight on the A-League at the moment, their crowds are a joke and its just a matter of time before they get the arse.
I honestly can't see big crowds in Canberra unless they somehow tap into market that the Raiders used to get and the Brumbies quite often get.
The FFA should get a team in Townsville happening ASAP, they're sports mad up their and would get bigger crowds than Canberra.
Personally I think Adelaide City should get the next spot!
JUVE JUVE JUVE JUVE!!!!!! ;)

Adelaides intrest isnt big enough to support 2 teams yet, Townsville, Gold Coast, Darwin and Tasmania are all options (non of which would go worse than NZ), atm Melbourne will be the 1st capital in line for a 2nd team, Adelaide certainly not though, but if it was to happen it would be City coming in.

AFC Competitions Committee rejects FFA appeal on change in ACL regulations
21 November 2006

KUALA LUMPUR: The AFC Competitions Committee meeting here at the AFC House this afternoon has rejected the appeal from the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) to amend the AFC Champions League regulations regarding the eligibility and participation of clubs.

FFA had requested that it be allowed to nominate two teams after the conclusion of the current league championship, the Hyundai A League, which concludes in February 2007, instead of last season’s top teams Sydney FC and Adelaide United FC who are eligible under the current competition rules to play in the 2007 edition of the continental club competition.

However, the Competitions Committee declined the request on the basis that the long-standing regulations are fixed for the minimum of a four-year cycle, and that to make continual changes during this term could weaken the competition. The regulations will not be amended prior to the 2009 edition of the AFC Champions League which will mark the commencement of a new four-year development cycle for AFC, and the re-formatting and improvement of the AFC Champions League competition.

The Competitions Committee also discussed that under the current dates of the A-League season, the names of the successful Australian clubs would not be known until a few days prior to the start of the 2007 AFC Champions League which could create some difficulties in fulfilling the necessary preparations.

Ms Clare Kenny Tipton, Assistant General Secretary and Director of Communications and Marketing commented: "The Competitions Committee have looked into this matter with the seriousness it deserves and concluded that in the overall context of the AFC Champions League, no change is necessitated at the present time."

She continued, " AFC are looking forward to the participation of Australia in Asia's premier club competition, and we are confident that the AFC Champions League will be boosted by the participation of Sydney FC and Adelaide U nited FC.”

The Committee also decided to hold the AFC Champions League 2007 Official Draw on December 22, 2006, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while the qualifying draws for the AFC U-19 Championship and AFC U-16 Championship will be held on December 21, 2006.

I heard the other day that a North Queensland & Wollongong consortium's are ready to go next year if NZ fall out, they were preparing for 2008 to make the comp 10 teams but may come in early...either would be good IMO, Wollongong used to be reasonabley strong in the old NSL and reasonable crowds from memory, with their League team now merged it would be a good opportunity to get s "footy" team back there
