It's been a while since we had any stats and with Burnley playing at Preston today, here are a few suprises:

The Burnley v Preston derby is the oldest football derby in the world, 120 years.
Burnley have played more games this season than any other club in all four leagues.
There have been 5 sendings off in the last 3 games between these two.
Alexander has played for both Preston and Burnley, and at 37 having clocked up 901 league games, is the only player in the Clarets squad to have played every minute in every game so far this season.

Following on from the "I love Burnley" mould

Todays FA Cup 4th round clash between West Brom and Burnley is only the 2nd time the two sides have met in the cup. The 1st time being 120 years ago

A few more FA Cup stats.

Here's a full run down of all the clubs that have won the cup and how many times they have won it.

Wins Teams
11 Manchester United
10 Arsenal
8 Tottenham Hotspur
7 Aston Villa, Liverpool
6 b4st4rd Rovers, Newcastle United
5 Everton, Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion
4 Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea, Manchester City, Sheffield United, Wolverhampton Wndrs
3 Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham United
2 Bury, Nottingham Forest, Old Etonians, Portsmouth, Preston North End, Sunderland

1 Barnsley, Blackburn Olympic, Blackpool, Bradford City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Clapham Rovers, Coventry City, Derby County, Huddersfield Town, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Notts County, Old Carthusians, Oxford University, Royal Engineers, Southampton, Wimbledon

1926-1927 Cardiff City 1 Arsenal 0 The year Cardiff took the FA Cup back to Wales.

1952-1953 Blackpool 4 Bolton Wanderers 3 Long thought of to be the greatest Cup Final ever.
Funny how the final score should be 4 - 3, as Blackpool beat Bolton 3 - 0 at home but lost 4 - 0 away to them in the league that year.

Burnleys only other meeting with WBA in the cup ended in a 5 - 1 defeat at WBA way back in 1889 (round 2)

Whilst I am in the stats thread, here is an interesting coincidence....well sorta...

Liverpool hold the all time league record for consecutive home wins, of 21 from 29the Jan to 30th Dec 1972.

But they also hold the all time league record for consecutive away losses, of 20 from 07/01/53 to 16/01/54.

Not so long ago when Arsenal were winning the title, they were dubbed as the most boring side in the EPL.

Well I think it is fair to say that that honour has passed to Man U this year. So is there a link between being "boring" and winning EPL titles?

This season so far, Man U has dibbed in with no less than 9 1-0 wins and 5 either 0-0 or 1-1 draws. There's no doubt, a current record 13 clean sheets has ensured that United don't lose games, but with a front line up of Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov, Ronaldo and the likes of Giggs etc, you would expect United's 'goals for' column to better than it is.

Coming in a close 2nd to the most boring side in the EPL must be Fulham with six 0-0 draws and five 1-0 games and Wigan with eight 1-0 games and four goaless draw, who share the honour.

Whilst it is fair to say that a 0-0 draw, or a 1-0 doesn't nesseccarily make for a boring game, goals are what football is all about.

So who is the most exciting team in the EPL ? Based on results and results alone, that accolade goes to perennial snoozers Arsenal. Only 5 1-0 games, and plenty of high scoring games, (18 of their 24 have involved games with more than 2 goals)

How times have changed

Chavski were also criticised heavily for this during their title runs with successive 1-0's where they'd scopre within the opening half hour then just shut up shop.

In the end, it cost Mourinho his job with Roman wanting to win and play attractive football at the same time (and look where sacking him has got them in their quest to play attractive football) - something which your above analysis suggest could be a pipe dream. In so many sports they say that defence wins titles.

It's interesting though with Berbatov, Rooney and Tevez up front - how could they not pour in the goals!

After VDS record breaking goaless run, I thought I would list the EPL keepers record so far this year.

Listed as Played, Cleansheets, Goals Conceded, Points
1 Edwin van der Sar (Man Utd) 23 18 9 54
2 Pepe Reina (Liverpool) 25 13 17 39
3 Petr Cech (Chelsea) 22 12 13 36
4 Brad Friedel (Aston Villa) 25 11 24 33
5 Tim Howard (Everton) 25 10 28 30
6 Mark Schwarzer (Fulham) 24 9 22 27
7 Manuel Almunia (Arsenal) 25 9 25 27
8 Chris Kirkland (Wigan) 22 8 22 24
9 Thomas Sorensen (Stoke) 23 7 34 21
10 Heurelho Gomes (Tottenham) 22 6 27 18
11 Joe Hart (Man City) 23 6 32 18
12 Robert Green (West Ham) 25 5 32 15
13 Shay Given (formerly Newcastle) 22 5 37 15
14 Marton Fulop (Sunderland) 16 4 22 12
15 Jussi Jaaskelainen (Bolton) 25 4 37 12
16 Paul Robinson (Blackburn) 25 4 40 12
17 David James (Portsmouth) 25 4 41 12
18 Boaz Myhill (Hull) 22 3 42 12
19 Scott Carson (West Brom) 25 4 47 12
20 Ross Turnbull (Middlesbrough) 22 2 34 6

Interesting to see gomez at No 10 after the criticism he has come in for from Spurs fans.

Schwarzer coming in at No 6 is a good achievement when you consider Fulham's away record and don't forget, in front of every good keeper, must be a good defence.

And what sweet justice to see Friedel in 4th and Robinson in at 16th

The criticism was directed moreso because he had probably 3 howlers that cost us probably 5-7 league points, which the way we're going, could be the difference come the end of the season.

On our Spurs forum, Gomes is the preferred option by about 75%, with many (clearly deluded numpties) rating him as one of the top 3 keepers in the league.

And on VDS... does anyone remember Gamba Osaka putting 3 past him in the World Club Championship? Those goals seem to have been conveniently forgotten by all and sundry.
