Will be interesting to see how the loss of these funds (and possibly any from next years CL) will affect the debt laden owners and their decision making.

IMO, the yeanks will be SCREWED if they lose CL funds next year. IIRC, those funds make up roughly 1/3rd of the relevant club's budget. And with the yanks lack of willingness to dip into their own pocket for the shorfall, it looks a grim situation as things currently stand.

On a brighter note for Liverpool fans, it could force the hand of the Yanks and the club could be put up for sale earlier than planned and a middle eastern group will start playing fantasy football.

Either that or the club will do a Leeds ;) .

On this point too, the Gooners would be screwed too without CL football. Although they have a yank businessman hovering, having just taken upped his stake to 29.9%. Premier League rules (I think - could be FIFA, could be UK, could be FA???) state that any owner taking up 30% MUST make a takeover bid for the club.

Yeah I reckon you're on the money DA, missing CL next year will either fix us or **** us I reckon ... Either the owners start flogging off players of decent value (ie Torres and/or Gerrard) or they get the hell out of there and get some Middle Eastern Billionaires to take charge.

hmmm not sure where your getting this info that if we miss CL we will crumble in debt??

not true whomever is telling you this or wherever your getting your info. Arsenal maybe in debt, but it because of the recent building of the land of gods ( Emirates ) not because of player paymentstransfers. hence the reason wenger is not buying big up on players, and that will change when the stadium is paid off, in the next few years. But there is no problem with the club missing CL. Maybe it will wake wenger up if we do so he WILL buy some more good players. IMO i not a fan of champions league, champions league should be for the CHAMPIONS , not 2nd, 3rd, 4th placings.

I'm beginning to think that the non-pursuit of tevez in the off season could be a big mistake.
I reckon he's just what we need at the moment.

Sorry mate, but that's the biggest load of rubbish post I've seen on here.

Arsenal's stadium debt is absolutely enourmous. That's the reason Whinger isn't buying players - because he can't. Do some reaserch - Arsenal's financial results and media commentary document quite clearly the extent of the debt burden. they don't call it 'Cashburden Grove' for nothing.

When you say there is no problem with the club missing CL, do you realise that CL football is worth bewteen 30-50m quid to a participating club? If you take say 40m out of Arsenal's income, they are FFFFFFFFFFF'ed. Absolutely F'ed.

To add to the importance of CL, when players are approached for a transfer, if a club can offer CL, that's a huge incentive for that player to make the switch. That's something that clubs like Spurs, Villa, Everton, Newcastle and to a lesser extent Citeh have all found as a stumbling block in recruiting and retaining the top echelon of players and managers.

If you're not such a big fan of CL - we'll hapilly take the burden off your hands and wheel it down the road!!!

Agreed. It's amazing how much Liverpool are missing Alonso. Mascherano is not the same player he was when Alonso was in the side too.

Another ex-Liverpool player who I think has absolutely dominated this season (when he hasn't been injured) is Bellamy. When he was linked with Spurs I thought bugger that, but he's proved to be one of Citeh's best performers.

I must admit, I wasn't too happy to see Bellamy go (and thats before the benefit of hindsight), although whilst I rated him I probably didn't see him reaching the heights he has this year.

Mascherano has improved a bit, but it's near impossible to have much creativity in your midfield when Lucas and Masch are the lynchpins.

There is no question about how much we have missed Xabi ... I knew he would be a loss, but I thought our gaffer was canny enough to replace most of what he brought to the table ... Looks as if RM was on the money when he commented prior to the season on just how important Alonso was to Liverpools onfield performance.

Sucks being a Liverpool, Adelaide United, Adelaide 36ers, Norwood fan this year lol :?

again, you are getting you facts from **** knows whom or who?? wenger doesnt buy players that cost to much because he does not want to cripple the club in debt over PLAYERS.this was stated and by him ages ago, and alos on the website. take the CL off our hands , i IMO cant stand the comp, but im one supporter. im aware of the financial money that comes with the CL. any one is and for your media confrence, whatever your going on about for arsenals debt over the stadium, thats correct i posted that. this will be gone sooner rather then later. im stating that we ARENT in debt because of player payments and transfer fees, only because of the stadium. which will be paid off soon., and how would you know about if wenger can buy players or not? i think your just hearing rumours

JAMIE CARRAGHER has set his sights on climbing into second place in Liverpool FC’s all-time appearance list.

The 31-year-old defender will play his 600th game for the club in tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Portsmouth.

He will become only the ninth player in Liverpool’s history to reach the impressive landmark and he is determined to enjoy many more years at the highest level.

Ian Callaghan’s record of 857 appearances may never be broken, but Carragher is hoping to surpass legends Ray Clemence and Emlyn Hughes, who are joint second on 665.

“The 500th game seems like yesterday so I can’t believe how quickly it has come around,” he said.

“It scares me how quickly that century of games have gone because probably in 100 games – if I’m still here – maybe it will be time to hang up my boots.

“When you’re a Liverpool player, you never look too far ahead because if you do that you’ll end up not focusing on what is immediately in front of you.

“My target at the beginning of each season is to play 50 games. If I don’t do that I’m disappointed.

“But I understand that I’m getting older and in a few years time that may not be possible. I’ve got another 18 months left on my contract so I’d like to be playing regularly next season.

“That means potentially I could finish this season on 620-625 then play another 40-odd games next season – taking me into second position in the all-time appearance list.

“Passing Ray Clemence would make me happy. It will prove that I’ve been up for the fight for a long time.”

Carragher signed his first professional contract with Liverpool back in October 1996 and made his debut three months later in a League Cup tie at Middlesbrough.

He has won every major honour apart from the Premier League title and was capped 34 times by England.

The Bootle-born centre-back believes he has reaped the rewards of looking after himself.

“I’ve never pulled a muscle in my life,” he said.

“I suppose that proves that I’ve prepared myself for every game in the right way – so that’s something I’m proud of.

“My aim at the beginning of every season is to play at least 50 times. The only season when that didn’t happen was when I broke my leg at Blackburn (2003/04).

“I look after myself better than anyone at the club and still feel as fit as I did five years ago.

“I’d like to think I’d be capable of playing 25 or 30 games for Liverpool at 34-35. If I wasn’t making a contribution I’d look to go somewhere else or retire.”

Liverpool’s defensive struggles earlier this season led to Carragher being the target of some harsh criticism. It’s been a testing few months but after 13 years at the club he’s been able to deal with it.

“As soon as you get to 30, you’re past it if you have one bad game,” he added.

“I’ve taken a lot personally – some of which I think has been a little bit harsh.

“I don’t think I was playing as bad as it was made out but I had to take it on the chin, take the medicine and get on with it and show my character.

“Liverpool is a great club to be at when everything is going well but when we’re struggling it’s a very difficult place to be.

“I think that’s why I’m still here after 14-15 seasons, because I can take the flak.

“There are plenty of ups and downs. You’ve got to be able to take the knocks if you’re going to be play for Liverpool.”

Fernando Torres started his Liverpool career with a bang and is the most prolific striker in his debut season in Liverpool's post-war history as well as being the most prolific foreigner in his debut Premier league season. Torres averaged a goal every 1.40 games (46 games/33 goals) in the 2006-7 season. Injury robbed him of several games in his second season, but he still managed to score 17 goals in 38 games.

Torres came on as a substitute in his hundreth game for Liverpool vs. Wigan Athletic on 16th December 2010 and scored his 61st goal in Liverpool's colours.

Here below you can see how his scoring record compares to other Liverpool greats after their landmark 100th game.

1 Roger Hunt 68

2 Sam Raybould 68

3 Jack Parkinson 64

4 Fernando Torres 61

5 John Aldridge 61

6 Albert Stubbins 61

7 Ian Rush 56
