thought they would have postponed the match between Newcastle and Man U , reason the state of the pitch with all the ice on the surface. yes it melted during the game but the passing in the first few minutes looked off from both team thanks to the surface ice?

I think all EPL side's home grounds have pitch heaters, so the ref was probably reluctant to call it off. Could have delayed the start though if as you say, the ice affected passing?

when the ice is broken up , when the ball is passed it bounces along the way instead of rolling :D

Wasn't ice, in the true sence Bully. Just a light smattering of snow that's all. No reason for a postponement imo.

I was suprised at the poor condition of the pitch in general though. It's not as though Toon have played a disproportionate amount of games on it. Unless they use if for rugby or something.

Reports Alan Shearer to take over at Newcastle

From correspondents in London
April 01, 2009

Alan Shearer is to be appointed Newcastle manager until the end of the season, according to BBC and Sky reports.

The 38-year-old-former Newcastle and England striker has been repeatedly linked with a return to his hometown club and, as recently as September, said he was interested in becoming a manager.

Chris Hughton is currently in caretaker charge at St James' Park while manager Joe Kinnear recovers from a triple heart bypass operation.

Shearer, now a television football pundit with the BBC, turned down the chance to join Premier League strugglers Newcastle as a coach in November.

Sky said Shearer, who ended his playing career with the Magpies in April 2006, was due to be formally unveiled as Newcastle's manager on Thursday.

If that was the case, his first game in charge would be Saturday's home match against Chelsea.

North-east side Newcastle are currently third from bottom, two points shy of safety, and have eight league games left this season in which to preserve their top-flight status.

Update:

Shearer confirmed as Magpies boss

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer will make an emotional return to St James' Park as manager until the end of the season.

Former QPR boss Iain Dowie will be his assistant and coaches Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood will stay on, but director Dennis Wise has left the club..............

Personally I think Shearer is a hell of a boost at the right time.

They will have the crowds behind them for their home games, and big al has already startred to make some training ground changes.

It makes it more interesting that's for sure.

Definitely makes it more interesting. IMO, the boost is just a crowd thing though. I can't see it having an effect on the players because so many of them are just there for the fat paycheck.

Time will tell, but my verdict for the Geordies is that they are still going down!
