That's correct. I remember them saying Viduka scored 4 when they won 4-3 against Liverpool.

No worries Pidge! I remember watching that game as a replay of the SBS Match of the Round... coverage of the world game has changed a lot in Australia since then.

NG.. Stoke went 3-2 up and then Blackpool levelled before a late, late winner for the Potters.

Barnley v Clarets, we got what we deserved.

Difference between them, Barnsley wanted it, Burnley weren't interested. It didn't help that we lost Paterson and goalkeeper Jensen so early in the game, but it wasn't so much that Barnley were dirty, more that they are less skilled, and that's why the big sides play thier 2nd string. Now we have possible both out for the Spurs game, and in truht we don't have the depth to play a weakend side and we can't afford to lose key players either.

Clattenberg is a piss poor ref at the best of times but fair credit it to him last night as he could easliy have sent off Eckersley for a second yellwo during the 8 mins od added time at the end of the 1st have, but once he realised he had already booked him, he decided just a final warning. Eckersley was pulled at half time to save him from being sent off.

So 1 1/2 games for the Clarets and Eckersley has been sent off once and booked and subbed once. not a good start to his Burnley career, and to think United want excess £2m for him
Still if the tribunal has watched his first 1 and a 1/2 games for us, it will be Fergie who is writing the cheque and not Coyle

I hate these games, and to top it off we spent more than an hour in a traffic jam on the motorway, as 8 lanes of motorway trafic converged into one lane with the road works.

Wed 23rd Sep

Aston Villa 1 Cardiff 0
Chelsea 1 QPR 0
Hull City 0 Everton 4
Preston 1 Tottenham 5
Man City 2 Fulham 1
Man Utd 1 Wolves 0

Manchester United looked to be in trouble half an hour into their home meeting with Wolves, but recovered admirably to seal a 1-0 victory.
Brazilian full-back Fabio saw red for the Red Devils after 30 minutes, but Sir Alex Ferguson's men rallied and Danny Welbeck snatched a winner after 66 minutes.

Everton made light work of their all-Premier League meeting with Hull City at the KC Stadium, easing to a 4-0 win.
The Toffees had the tie wrapped up inside 25 minutes, allowing them to preserve their energy ahead of the resumption of league duties this weekend.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni curled David Moyes' men in front after 11 minutes and his strike partner Jo doubled their advantage nine minutes later.
Dan Gosling was then awarded acres of space by the Tigers after 24 minutes and made no mistake as he wrapped up a comfortable win.
Hull were marginally better after the interval but were unable to prevent Leon Osman from adding a fourth after 57 minutes.

Tottenham were made to work a lot harder at Deepdale by Preston North End, but prevailed 5-1.
Peter Crouch broke the deadlock for Spurs after 14 minutes, benefiting from some fine work by Gareth Bale before finishing in style.
Harry Redknapp's side were then grateful to Heurelho Gomes for keeping them in front on a number of occasions before the in-form Jermain Defoe nodded home after 37 minutes.
Crouch then killed off the Lilywhites' dogged efforts with 13 minutes remaining when he notched his second of the game, but Chris Brown did rescue some pride for the hosts when he found the net with seven minutes remaining.
Robbie Keane looked to have had the last word on the night when he profited from some tired Preston legs to add his name to scoresheet after 87 minutes, but Crouch wrapped up his hat-trick with just seconds remaining.

Aston Villa were also in action against Championship opposition and put paid to Cardiff City's dreams as they emerged as 1-0 victors.
The men from the Midlands burst out of the blocks against the Bluebirds and grabbed the only goal of the game after just three minutes.
Gabriel Agbonlahor was the man on target as he fired home after being found by the hard-working John Carew.
James Milner squandered a golden opportunity to build on that lead in the second half when he smashed a penalty against a post.

Chelsea were pushed hard by second tier outfit Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge, but did enough to secure a 1-0 win.
The Blues, who were skippered by the returning Joe Cole, were thankful to Salomon Kalou's 52nd minute effort for bailing them out of trouble.

Manchester City and Fulham looked destined to be heading for penalties at Eastlands before the Blues claimed a 2-1 win.
Zoltan Gera's spectacular 34th minute strike opened the scoring, but Gareth Barry levelled seven minutes into the second half.
There were no further goals in normal time, but Kolo Toure ensured it would be City who go into Saturday's fourth round draw when he pounced with nine minutes of extra-time remaining.

Up the yids!! The real lillywhites prevailed.

Did anyone see crouchies third goal? It was ridiculously awesome - a deft little backheel from a great bit of work by Lennon and keano.

The problem with Barcelona is that I like fish and chips but they had to turn it into calamari and patatas

Tuesdays Wrap

Manchester United's second string overcame the dismissal of Gary Neville to march into the last eight of the Carling Cup thanks to goals in each half from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen to beat Barnsley 2-0.
Welbeck headed home Anderson's corner while unmarked in the fifth minute and Owen's neat finish just before the hour-mark put the holders in the clear in front of a sell-out crowd at Oakwell.
Barnsley skipper Stephen Foster hit the angle of post and crossbar in the first half, but even after Neville's straight red card for a high tackle on Adam Hammill, the Coca-Cola Championship side were unable to bridge the gulf in class.

Frederic Piquionne provided the inspiration as Portsmouth stormed into the quarter-finals by demolishing Stoke 4-0 at Fratton Park.
The worst scoring record in the Barclays Premier League may have left Pompey rooted to the foot of the table, but they had few problems hitting the target in the cup.
Piquionne struck twice and set up another for Danny Webber before Kanu completed the rout to make it 11 goals from their three matches in the competition so far.

Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane got Tottenham dreaming of Carling Cup glory again after reaching the quarter-finals at the expense of Everton 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
Spurs reached the final of the competition in the last two seasons, winning it in 2008, and they are two ties from Wembley again after Huddlestone's thunderbolt volley and Keane following up his own saved penalty.
They still needed saves from Heurelho Gomes at the start of each half to extend Everton's run of matches without a win to five.

Blackburn booked their place in the quarter-finals with a comfortable 5-2 win over 10-man Peterborough at Ewood Park.
Peterborough initially made life difficult for their hosts as Chris Whelpdale equalised Martin Gamst Pedersen's early opener, but goalkeeper Joe Lewis was sent off just before half-time for clattering Pedersen and Steven Reid slotted home the spot-kick.
Peterborough managed a second equaliser through George Boyd just after half-time, but Rovers soon made the difference in numbers tell with Michel Salgado, Benni McCarthy and a Nicola Kalinic penalty completing a comprehensive 5-2 victory.

Brad Guzan emerged as the Aston Villa hero as Martin O'Neill's men secured their place in the Carling Cup quarter-finals at Sunderland's expense.
The American, an understudy to Brad Friedel at club and international level, saved Kenwyne Jones' late penalty to take the game to extra-time and ultimately penalties after it finished 0-0 after 120 minutes.
And he maintained his excellence by saving three of Sunderland's four spot-kicks in the shoot-out with Ashley Young converting the clincher to send Villa into the last eight.
The Wearsiders will feel hard done by but they only have themselves to blame after squandering some gilt-edged chances, none more presentable than that which fell to Kieran Richardson in the closing minutes of the extra period

Wednesdays Wrap

Teenager Fran Merida netted his first Arsenal goal as Arsene Wenger's young Gunners beat Liverpool 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.
Just back from the Under-20 World Cup with Spain, the 19-year-old former Barcelona trainee drilled in a fine first-half strike as Wenger's faith in youth was once again justified.
Nicklas Bendtner, himself only 21 but now a regular in the side, produced a powerful finish after 50 minutes to put Arsenal into the last eight after Emiliano Insua had equalised with another scorching shot.

Chelsea cruised into the quarter-finals with an easy 4-0 fourth-round victory over Bolton at Stamford Bridge.
First-half goals from Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda put the home side in command before Deco and substitute Didier Drogba finished off Gary Megson's side after the break.
Bolton wasted a couple of chances to reduce the arrears but Chelsea were always in control despite the loss of goalkeeper Hilario through injury in the first half.
The win maintained Chelsea's 100% home record under new coach Carlo Ancelotti and even without the likes of rested captain John Terry and his England team-mate Frank Lampard, the Blues continue to look invincible at home.

Manchester City cruised into the Carling Cup quarter-finals, brushing aside a brave but outclassed **** 5-1.
The Championship side had tried their best at Eastlands in this fourth-round tie, and at one stage produced a fine first-half equaliser from Jonathan Forte after Stephen Ireland had given City an early lead.
But City were ahead by the break through Roque Santa Cruz, and second-half goals from Joleon Lescott, Carlos Tevez and Michael Johnson set the seal on a commanding performance

A good result for United and some vindication for Fergie who has been sticking up for Uniteds younger brigade after the Benfica match.

I actually thought Utd were pretty terrible, which says nothing for Spurs.

Gibson scored 2 blinders and that was that. Utd didn't really give a whimper other than that, but at the end of the day, that's all that's required.

Spurs had much more of the play and set up better chances, but didn't take them.

I'm pretty pissed at Defoe who could have easily levelled it on 19 mins, but blindly fired straight at Vidic & Kuszac. Bentley also had a great chance but fluffed it, as he's made a habit of doing for Spurs (Wigan goal excluded).

Berbatoss seems a fraction of the player that left Spurs. Vidic looked particularly dodgy and I'd go as far as saying the majority of Utd's younger crew that featured tonight (Gibson excluded who was OUTSTANDING) will not go on and have careers at Utd.

On a bright note, Bale looked back to his best for Spurs. I really hope he continues to develop as his left peg is pure gold.

As for Ut'd plastic fans.....what a disgrace.
The 50k that did rock up obviously had their mouths stuffed full of prawn and cucumber sarnies because aside from the odd "We are Tottenham", "Just like the Library" and of course the song about Dimitar's mum from the spurs fans, you could have heard a pin drop.

Theatre of deafening silence.....

Didnt see the game so cant really comment too much on it. Reading a few reports tho there seems to be some good feedback about the young right back De Laef (spelling?). Apparently he was spotted by Ole Gunnar - fingers crossed he has an eye for talent like he had an eye for goal.

I have liked what Obertan has shown in his limited time this year. needs alot of work to add some polish to his game but i think there is some great technique there.

You sound a bit upset there mate. ;)

Bit harsh on the United youngsters. Remember they were playing against an almost full strength Spurs side (who was really missing? Kranjcar.. anyone else) and they did enough for the win.

Gibson has an awesome shot on him, he can really strike the ball, both goals were great but his second was a lovely finish. Welbeck looked alright I thought, De Laet did well at left back as well... I thought Anderson was superb and really controlled the game.

They may not have played the best football but did enough for a 2-0 win which is all you need to do in a cup tie which Tottenham were obviously quite desperate to win despite the fact they have real top 4 aspirations this season, I was surprised by the team they put out there...
