Spurs manager Jol suggested on TV tonight that the winners of the UEFA cup should get a qualifying place in the CL next year. IMO not a bad idea, maybe he thinks this will be Spurs turn

Cheers JTC.

On Riise's bankrupcy, apparently it was due to investments he was involved with and the likelihood is that he was never even aware ofthe situation, as mentioned previously, his weekly wage is twice the debt so no issues there.

With tonights matches not going according to script (well at least the one I'd painted in my mind), I'll certainly be getting up early next week to watch what should be intriguing return legs.

JTC, How did big-mouth Totti play?

I hope you're right!

It would be a great idea and a great reward for the winner.

What a disgrace in Italy with the crowd behaviour and worse, the police behaviour. Hearing stories like that - no wonder that cop got killed a couple of months ago. I wasn't keen to go to Italy in my travels anyway, but I think I'll steer well clear, which is a shame because there are some things I'd like to have seen. Barbarians!

Shrek finally scored. :x :x . But Roma has Totti the ballbag so I was hoping both sides would lose!!!! I'd love to see Totti bite his own thumb off one day during his stupid goal celebration.

I did read that not long ago, that is fantastic news now all we need is another goal scoring striker to help the man out. Hopefully he gets the chance to face Newcastle in a league match soon ;)

Crowd trouble at Roma overshadows the result. Roma fans charged the barrier separating the fans and the Italian police wade into the Man U fans, making the whole situation worse. Some Man U fans pretty badly beaten up (by the police) and one stabbed earlier in the day as troubl flared in the city before the kick off.  United fans still being held in the stadium and unlikely to be release for at least another 90 minutes.

As much as I don't care for Man U, I have some sympathy for their fans here. TV pictures show the police just wading in with battens hitting any fan within reach. Many were trying to get out of the way. Scenes of 3 or 4 police just clubbing a fan who was lying on the ground.

Cameras showing Italian fans throwing bottles into crowd when Man U scored, whilst police stood by and did nothing. Absolute disgrace. Not for a moment suggesting that all Man U fans were angels, but clear that the Italian police were quote "heavy handed" and the Roma fans were there for more than just to watch football. Not heard the end of this.

From the Adelaide Advertiser:

AN English football fan is in a serious condition after being stabbed in the neck during clashes before the Champions League quarter-final match between AS Roma and Manchester United in Rome today.
The Manchester United supporter was among 18 people taken to San Giacomo hospital after violence close to the Olympic Stadium, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
Around 300 English fans, many of whom were under the influence of alcohol, were involved, ANSA reported.
Inside the stadium, United fans were baton charged by Italian police shortly after Roma scored its first goal in a 2-1 win for the Italian side.
Police acted after United fans had reacted to spiteful provocation from the Roma supporters in the north enclosure.
Roma supporters had run towards fencing that separated the rival fans, and pelted their United counterparts with plastic drink bottles, many of them full.
The police then baton-charged the United supporters, leaving at least one English fan stunned and nursing a bloodied head.
Rome police chief Achille Serra had ordered a 15-hour ban on alcohol sales to football fans in the Italian capital.

This is insane. Anyone seen the movie 'Euro Trip' where the Man U supporters are in France I think and going bananas. I thought it was played up for the movie - obviously it wasn't!

Isn't it funny that the United supporters are always singing to LFC fans about Hillsborough and Heysel as if they are squeaky clean.......

That's two Champions League ties in a row where the Mancs have caused trouble.

At least one English club and it's fans made the country proud in Holland on Tuesday evening.

Poor defending also. We won't win anything until we learn to defend!

Trouble with the spurs fans too - VERY ordinary. If we get chucked out for our so called 'fans' (and I use that term loosely for these idiots) I'll be shattered.

Totti is a pain in the arse C-P. To be fair Roma played pretty well in the 1st half but resorted to the European tactics, time wasting, and playing for fouls. Totti spent most of his time chasing the referee asking for cards to be shown everytime a Valencia player went down like he had just been shot with a 12 bore, usually afet a Man U player had accidentally breathed on him. These tactics are ruining football and the standard of refereeing is a disgrace..

Be careful not to tar all italians with the same brush DA. Just like in Aust, there are some real idiots pretending to be football fans.
Italy is a great place. We are buying a house out there in the Abruzzo area. Fantastic sights, food and people. If you get a chance on the way over, try to get there. You will have no trouble at all.

Bit unfair there MST. If you saw the TV, clear that Roma fans and Italian police were at fault. I watched the game live as it developed and it obvious that the police were out to take on the United fans.

As for the taunts. Not just Man U that sing to Pool about Hillsboro and Heysel. It makes be ashamed to be a pom when I hear that kind of abuse. Was watching the Hillsboro game live on telly when it happened, shocking scenes, and Heysel. Equally United have to endure the constant taunts about Munich in 1958. Equally as shameful, particularly for the relatives of those who died.
As I said previously, I don;t care much for Man U but one this occasion I don't think it is down to their fans.

Looks like a shoe in for the reply. Pool are coming good just at the right time and look a good bet to make the final. They will have to get past Chelski in the semi's should they over come Valencia. Thats another good omen for Pool as they have a ggod record against Chelski in the CL. Lets keep our fingers crossed for a Pool Man U final. 8)

UEFA Cup Result 5th April

Postby johntheclaret » Fri Apr 06, 2007 8:22 am

Sevilla 2 - 1 Spurs.

Spurs really unlucky not to get more out of this game, but must fancy themselves to progress to the semi's after the White Hart Lane replay.
Great start with Keane goal after 3 mins, wiped out by an absolute disgrace of a decision to give a penalty to Sevilla. As said before, quality of European referees leaves a lot to be desired.
On queue, ex Spurs Kanute converts to make it 1 - 1. Spurs conceeded a second and that just lead to Sevilla resorting to the typical Eurofootystyle. Waste time, dive like you got shot, kill the game as a specticle, try to get the opposition team players sent off, etc, etc, etc.

Spurs puffed hard but had few chances and in the end Sevilla looked more dangerous on the odd occasions they did get forward. Lennon took of with 10 mins left, replaced by Malbranc, who had a great opportunity to equalise. Shame he had only been on a couple of minutes, other wise may have scored. Lee carried an injury though most of the second half exposing the right side.

Hope you are not too dispondent DA, Think you will progress despite this defeat. Spurs are good at home, and ignoring the UEFA cup, they have been poor on their travels in the EPL this year

Game again over shadowed by crowd trouble, and again it seems the police come out badly. There was no trouble before the game as both sets of fans mixed together, the official supporters fan clubs exchanged gifts etc and after the police pulled away, the trouble stopped. Hmmmm

Won't be long before UEFA calls for bans on EPL clubs.

I am not just defending EPL clubs because they're are English. I just think there needs to be a balanced approach. Not sure how much the Spurs fans were to blame tonight (Sorry DA, but they did seem to be ripping the seats out and throwing them at the police), but Man U fans certainly not responsible for last night IMO.

Roosters at the Dogs for a night game (around 10 am 1st bounce) and no bloody radio coverage.  Will have to settle for the on-line scoreboard and the Roost forum

Sorry MST, was re-reading your post. Not entirely sure about the connection here. Don't disagree that clubs cruelly taunt Pool over Hillsborough, but the disaster had absolutely nothing to do with the Liverpool fans in so much that the deaths were caused because the police allegedly opened the gates to the Leppings Lane end and ushered Pool fans outside the ground into the already overcrowed stand. This included fans that didn't have tickets. As several thousand fans were herded in the police then allegedly closed the gates trapping the fans inside. None of this was done with any malice on anyones part, and was a terrible tragic accident. There has been many enquiries into the police action and the length of time it took to help the fans, now being crushed to death, at the front of the stand. Even the players and some Forest fans joined in trying to help get Pool fans out.
Whilst hooliganism is to blame for Heysel, it certainly had nothing to do with Hillsborough
