The FA Cup 2008/9

Postby johntheclaret » Tue Nov 11, 2008 8:28 am

Here's the 1st round (proper)

For those not sure, the FA cup is open to all FA affiliated clubs, but the lowest leagues (non leagues and amateurs have to play through a fistful of Qualifying rounds 1st. The survivors then get the chance to go againets the two bottom leagues (League 1 & League 2), in the 1st round proper.

The "big guns" of the EPL and CCC don't enter until the 3rd round proper. But there are some tasty draws all the same, considering you have sides like Leeds and Leicester in L1.

Round Up

Tiny Histon were handed an FA Cup date to savour after being paired with Leeds United in the second-round draw - a fitting reward for their 1-0 victory over Swindon on Saturday.
The proviso is that Leeds must first overcome Northampton in their first-round replay. But Histon will be winners in either scenario as the Cambridgeshire village lies only 52 miles from Northampton, making the fixture a local derby.
It is the prospect of hosting Leeds at their 4,500-capacity Bridge Road ground that thrilled the Blue Square Premier's smallest club, especially if they are chosen for live television coverage.
The £75,000 fee Histon would receive represents a quarter of the club's annual £300,000 budget.
Chairman Gareth Baldwin said: 'The publicity will be exceptional if it's Leeds because of the fact they are a monster of a club and we are a little village outfit. It will capture the imagination of the general public. 'They have enormous pedigree. It's not that long ago that they were in the Champions League semi-finals. Everybody at the club would be buzzing. If we get a TV game, it would be a big boost. We are pushing to get in the Football League and that could help us with one or two players to achieve that.'

Saturday's other giantkillers, Curzon Ashton and Blyth Spartans, were handed ties which offer the prospect of progress to the third round and a potential meeting with one of the Premier League giants.

Unibond First Division North side Curzon will not fear travelling to Blue Square Premier club Kidderminster after their 3-2 win over Exeter, and Blyth's reward for beating Shrewsbury 3-1 is a trip to Bournemouth, the team 91st in the League.

Havant & Waterlooville, who twice led Liverpool at Anfield in the fourth round last season, were beaten 3-1 at home by Brentford. Trailing 2-0 after 65 minutes to goals from Marvin Williams and Charlie MacDonald, Havant used the howling gale at their backs to mount a comeback.
Defender Ian Simpemba headed home and then, with nine minutes remaining, it required Brentford keeper Ben Hamer to produce an astonishing triple save to keep out three point-blank efforts. Brentford broke clear and Nathan Elder sidefooted in.

A last-minute goal from Craig Mackail-Smith gave Peterborough a 1-0 win at Ryman Premier side Hornchurch, and Kaid Mohamed's winner 15 minutes from time earned Blue Square Premier Forest Green a 1-0 win at Blue Square South side Team Bath.

Thank god the Foxes got over the first round as we add another unwanted record to our history books. We have a horrible hstory of losing to lower division and non-league teams (cue Wycombe a few years back when we were top 5 in the Premier!). It is bad enough playing in the 3rd tier for the first time in our history but last Saturday was the first time we had ever played in Round 1 of the FA Cup!

God I hope we get promoted this season!

Well that wouldn't really surprise me as United have drawn EPL opposition in almost every round over the past few seasons.

It's the great thing about the FA Cup, village clubs can end up tackling the mighty EPL clubs (and sometimes even winning them).

This is why the FA Cup 3rd Round is one of the best days on the football calendar. It's when the small clubs (if they are lucky enough to get through) are in the same draw as the heavyweights. Even if it's two small clubs battling it out, they know they if they get the win they are a chance for a big game, and big payday.

A bitter and costly error fro Droylesden

Thanks to the Daily Mail

Giantkillers Droylsden kicked out of FA Cup after fielding ineligible player

Giantkillers Droylsden have been expelled from the FA Cup for fielding an ineligible player.
The Blue Square North side had beaten Chesterfield 2-1 but defender Sean Newton, who scored both goals for the Manchester side, should have been serving a suspension for picking up five bookings.
An FA Cup protest sub-committee ordered that Droylsden be removed from the competition and League Two side Chesterfield will now play Ipswich in the third round on Saturday.

The sub-committee also ruled that the FA Cup prize fund payment of £30,000 should be redirected to Chesterfield.
However, Droylsden chairman Dave Pace has confirmed that his club will appeal, which will be considered on Wednesday.
The tie between Droylsden had already been dogged by incident with two postponements, the first due to fog and then floodlight failure, either side of a 2-2 draw at Saltergate which was controversial because Chesterfield deliberately conceded an equaliser after scoring when the ball had been put out for an injury.

OK, so who's going to pull a monster upset this round?

IMO, Barnsley could be a shout at West Ham.
Barrow at Boro????? Has giant killing minnows (or a 10-0 defeat) written all over it.
Peterborough over West Brom perhaps?

OR

Could the Southend boys continue the trend of sides beating Chavski at the Bridge? I BLOODY hope so!

And so it begins.
15th placed league one side Hartlepool are 2-0 up over Stoke. Not complete giant killing, but a big scalp for Hartlepool just the same.
