West Ham United footballer Calum Davenport and his mother have been stabbed in an attack at their home.

The 26-year-old defender is undergoing surgery on both legs after being set upon at his family home in Bedford.

Police have launched an investigation and his injuries have been described by doctors as "serious".

West Ham released a statement on the stabbing which read: "West Ham United can confirm that Calum Davenport was being treated in hospital on Saturday afternoon after an incident late on Friday night.

"The 26-year-old defender and his mum both suffered stab wounds at home in Bedford. His mum is recovering while Calum underwent surgery this morning and his injuries were described as serious by doctors. The club's medical team are in contact with hospital staff.

"The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family and, due to the ongoing police investigation, no further information will be released at this time."

The 26-year-old is a former England Under-21 international, who cost the Hammers £3million when he joined them from Tottenham during the summer of 2007.

He did not figure in West Ham's first game of the season, at Wolves last week.

Bedford-born Davenport spent a spell on loan at Premier League rivals Sunderland last season and has also been loaned out to Watford.

The centre-back started his career at Coventry and has also played on loan at Southampton and Norwich.

Police probe footballer stabbing

Two men arrested over the stabbing of West Ham footballer Calum Davenport and his mother at their home near Bedford are still being held in custody.

Mr Davenport, 26, had emergency surgery on both legs following the attack early on Saturday. He remained in a serious but stable condition on Sunday morning.

A 25-year-old was arrested in Derby on suspicion of attempted murder and was being escorted to Bedford, police said.

A second man, aged 19, was arrested early on Saturday in Bedford.

He remains in custody, suspected of being involved in causing grievous bodily harm.

Police said the mother and son were set upon in the early hours in Springfield Avenue, Kempston.

West Ham said its thoughts were with the player and his family.

It is understood Mr Davenport's 49-year-old mother, was recovering. Her son is being treated at Bedford Hospital.

The former England under-21 international defender joined West Ham for £3m in 2007.

He moved to the east London club from Tottenham, who are playing West Ham at Upton Park later.

He had a spell on loan at Sunderland last season and has also played for Coventry City. He also had loan spells at Norwich City and Southampton while at Tottenham.

Doctors confident they can save footballer Calum Davenport's leg

Stabbed footballer Calum Davenport received a boost yesterday after doctors said they are “confident” of saving his leg.

The West Ham player is making a good recovery and was moved from intensive care to a general ward.

It was feared the 26-year-old Premier League defender may lose his left leg after being stabbed several times on Saturday.

A main artery was severed in the attack, allegedly carried out by his pregnant sister’s boyfriend Worrell Whitehurst.

Calum’s family, who are keeping a bedside vigil at Bedford Hospital, were said to be “over the moon”. A friend said: “Calum’s doing really well.”

Calum’s mum Kim, 50, who was also injured in the attack, has been discharged from the same hospital.

Whitehurst, 25, from Derby, is charged with grievous bodily harm.
