Posters using different accounts / usernames over time

A poster has turned up on the SANFL board that reminds me very much of a poster under a different username in the past who was well known under a 3rd username even earlier. I think he's been banned several times. Some of you may know who I am talking about.

It feels uneasy when you talk with someone who you think is someone you debated with before but aren't sure. In this case I'm still not 100% sure.

What's the site policy in relation to this? If you only change your username but keep the same account that's fine as all your post history is intact. But if you get into multiple accounts over time should they be forced to have a reference in their latest username to their old accounts so other posters know who they are dealing with?

Happens from time to time in the Regionals and usually it's only to stir trouble. I haven't encountered it outside of them, but there are forums I don't contribute much to.

When I first signed up I had a different username, but somehow it let me log in, but not access any forums...

Thought I might have been banned, but a workmate who used to post DID get banned, and got a very different message...

Meh, I only posted on the EP Sport forum then anyway...

Must admit a couple of years ago I used a different username just to stir the pot of a few blokes on my regular forum. Was good value at the time, but most of these double-ups get found out pretty damn quickly, like I did, so I'm thinking it doesn't happen as much as we all think.

First Ive heard about it, will investigate. Whilst we may "appear" to do nothing if we did investigate and they were different people you will not be aware of the outcome, just be aware we will follow it up and follow any queries re multiple posters up.
When it comes to multiple ids for posters our investigations can sometimes be conclusive and other times they can't (we use email addys, IP no's posted from, etc), if we're on doubt we have to give the benefit of the doubt to the poster, we can't ban someone for thinking they may have multiple ids.

To be fair, if it does happen which I've got no idea whether it does or doesn't, it's almost impossible to police.

You can easily use another email address to register and tracing source IP addresses is meaningless because the vast majority of ISPs allocate dynamics IPs.

It might be nearly "impossible" to police but when the moderators become aware of instances, action is taken, anything up to a permanent ban can be implemented.

We take that into account, so no we dont automatically assume that.
It is a good indication sometimes though.

On this subject - and my thoughts only.

Given that site rules state that you can only have one 'username'
If someone then chooses to have more than one - (for whatever reason - coverup/trolling/back up their own arguments etc, etc)
I actually find this to be a form of dishonesty towards other members and therefore/perhaps a reflection on said persons character.

One person has registered over 50 usernames which we've banned, needless to say the guy is a loon and why anyone would have anything to do with him in any capacity is beyond me.
