I went hoping to have another crack today .But overcast cold and a wind blowing in my face I decided to fight another day.
Don't get me wrong I'll fish in almost gale force winds,if they can be at my back or over the shoulder .But the most important thing is the temperature and Sun neither of which were around .
Cheers
Perhaps a twilight fish during the week

Going to pop down there one night this week myself Micky.

Some pics you took ( little concrete area near an inlet ) South of Bower on the Eastern Side of the lake is where I head.

Also tried the beaches on warmer nights when you can wade out. No fly for me though, just some white bait.

I love fishing the west lake beaches just wish the weed would go.
If its low tide try the West lakes outlet into the river .I will be if its low tide my next trip there.Thinking Thursday twilight for my next trip.
If I pull up ok after work and don't ahve to do a 10 hr day.

Otherwise it will be Saturday and Sunday weather permitting.
Mullies should be about soon seeing I didn't mention something was chasing the school of mullet/bait-fish I scared.I got a couple of large boils(I think the water is called when the fish are about to strike) might have been snook for all I know ;)

Nah mate, usually only 30-33 with 30% you catch going back. Always get a few good ones but it is a breeding ground. You never miss the quota though. Kingfish also being caught inside Coffins at the moment. Bring on the weekend already!!

haha, that comment sounded alot like it
I used to go all the time when I was young, but with footy cricket and everything, never had time
what I meant about the reel was I have always used the egg beater style and was given a nice new abu garcia overhead reel, since I have never used one, I had just been chucking lines in to get used to it.
and its more fun casting and catching something then just casting out and reeling in.

That make more sense Swampy??

Re: FISHING

Postby Mickyj » Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:53 am

Well I hit the lake again this morning with high hopes .Deciding it was time to return to my favourite style of SWFF in my shorts and old sand shoes I left the pvc waders at home(last weeks sauna on feet was not fun).
So in to some cold water I went .Where were the fish I could see them early but they were now!!
Deciding to head to the next beach I walked up the foot path and saw them sitting in the sun. With the wind coming from the wrong direction I needed to walk past the fish and cast at them.
With a few more casts with no interest in my White and Orange popper fly I changed over to a Barbie pink one.And in all truth half the pink came off in my hand.
But I put it on and after a few casts I had successfully scared one large bream. And had four tiny fish pop out the water at Barbie.
So finally deciding to head to the next beach I was off .A local told to try this spot there's some fish there .
And fist cast with Barbie bang I'm on with a very tiny Bream but he spat the fly very quickly. At this stage they were going off jumping at my fly I think I had about 10 jumps pops even one almost at my side .Then nothing went back to beach one found the fish but nothing
But no more strikes I'm afraid the tide was going out and the fish had stopped playing.
That was it two hours of fun in the morning sun.

PS
Booney if u go past that plaque in that picture you will miss the 40 to 50 cm fish sitting in the shallows about a fly rod lengths in .

The drought Breaks Just
Well as I had only a short time to fish this morning I headed to the same end of the lake. But I headed to the Sea side of the lake .And what a mistake that was that awful Weed was still clogging large areas .
So I headed to the side I fished yesterday .Nothing much was happening I had about four rises four tiny tiny Bream to my Green popper.I left the water and headed to the tiny little spot that gave me so much action in about 10 minutes yesterday.A couple of tiny Bream rose to the Green popper and that was that.
As I had walked to yesterdays hot spot I spied some very large Bream again with the biggest around the 50 cm mark.
So with the wind blowing in the wrong direction I climbed down the rocks and hit the water. But first I changed from Green to Yellow Popper .I was getting lots and lots of tiny fish jumping for it .And of course I would move the damn thing at the wrong time and the bow wave from larger fish would swim away.
At this stage I thought all I am doing is chasing the fish away .
When Wham up jumps this small bream and the hook sets he did put a nice little bend in the rod .But he wasn't coming off hooked fair and square in the side of the month
Image
And the fly in the corner of the mouth
Image
And that fish fell at 8.45 am after around an hour and half wading and walking .I had a few more "rises" or jumps and pops .But that was it

The lake/estuary where Micky fishes JAS is somewhat dubious in its water quality. It has, over the years, fallen ill to different types of noxious weeds. The last out break was a major threat to the Gulf which has some of the most prolific recreational fishing waters in SA.

Could have been a serious disaster if it ( the weed ) had made its way into the Gulf. Some did, but the authorities actually got the managment of this right.

I fish the same waters and would not eat anything I caught in there. The water way gets used for lots of water sports and people do swim in there, but I wouldnt eat the fish.

Some people do and may have no ill-effects, but this little black duck isn't going to find out.
