Retired five-time Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain of Spain believes Lance Armstrong is innocent.

Armstrong was officially stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life on Monday after the International Cycling Union (UCI) ratified the US Anti-Doping Agency's decision.

The UCI was responding to USADA's 1,000-page report, which included testimonies from 11 of Armstrong's former team-mates claiming the American used performance-enhancing drugs.

But despite the overwhelming evidence, Indurain is not convinced.

"So far I believe in his innocence, he has always complied with all the rules," Indurain told Spanish radio station Marca.

As a result of the governing body's decision to clear Armstrong's triumphs from the record, Indurain, who won five successive Tour de France titles between 1991 and 1995, was reinstated as the joint-most successful cyclist in the world's premier road race.

During Armstrong's 20 years on the professional circuit, the former US Postal service rider never returned a positive drugs test.

Armstrong was penalised on the back of testimonies from team-mates, including confessed drug-cheat Tyler Hamilton and Indurain has brought USADA's process into question.

"I'm a little surprised, it is a bit odd that it was done only with testimonies," he said.

"The standards were one way and now it seems that they have changed.

"He followed all the rules there were at the time and had no problem.

"Every (legal) case he took, he won them. In sports they have seized upon the testimony of fellow riders to take away the Tours."

More surprising for the 1996 Olympic time-trial champion was Armstrong's decision not to fight USADA's findings, with the disgraced cyclist opting to accept all charges.

"He has always been a fighter," Indurain said. "What surprises me is he doesn't fight any more, even when the regulations are not followed."

He got done in 1994 for taking a steroidal nasel inhaler over and above legal limits but the IOC and UCI exonerated him...

VO2 max isn't the be all and end all in aerobic sports, important but not as important as other factors

Well given LA's Alpe D'Huez best time is over 4 mins faster that CEs I doubt it.

The "cleanest" known (Virenque's) rider's time is 1.5 mins slower than the record holder Pantani and only ranks 10th in the list of best ever times.

if Evans and Wiggins et al were doing the same times as the drug cheats now I'd give your argument some credence, but given that are not, I'm happy to think the current lot are certainly cleaner.
