2010 Commonwealth Games

Postby brod » Tue Aug 24, 2010 11:08 pm

The Games are scheduled to be held in Delhi, India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The games will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India generally, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. It will also be the first time the Commonwealth Games will be held in India and the second time the event has been held in Asia (after 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).

There have been a number is controversial issues around the games
- Security
- Delays in completing stadia (will the athlete village and pool be ready in time??)
- Corruption of the Organising Committee
- Rorting of the tender process for contracts relating to the Games
- Use of child labour
- Mozzies around unfinished stadia are a cuase of spread of dengue
- Sex workers being flown to Delhi in preperation of the Games
- Huge public back lash about the use of public money

Looks like its going to be a great time....

from adelaidenow

ONLY two per cent of tickets for October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi have been sold, with organisers banking on a late rush to fill stadiums.

Some 50,000 tickets have been sold so far from a total of 2.3 million available for the October 3-14 Games in the Indian capital.

Organisers concede they're likely to experience a shortfall of sales in the vicinity of half a million tickets.

Tickets have been available since June 4 online, and the pace of sales was expected to pick up once tickets were available over the counter from Wednesday.

However, the start to the second phase of the ticketing process, when online bookings were also to translate into physical tickets, did not go smoothly.

Hundreds of people returned empty-handed from designated counters across New Delhi yesterday because the tickets had yet to arrive.

Games organising committee secretary-general Lalit Bhanot blamed a technical glitch for the delay.

"There was some problem with the distribution system but we have things in place now and the process will start on Thursday," Bhanot said.

Demand for tickets so far has not been for sports, but rather opening and closing ceremonies.

But the ceremonies will be largely for the affluent due to the cost - most of the tickets are priced at 5000 rupees ($A119), 25,000 rupees ($616) and 50,000 rupees ($A1165).

The prices are steep in a country where a person's average monthly income is about 3000 rupees ($A72).

The lowest denomination of tickets for the ceremonies, priced at 1000 rupees ($A24) have sold quickly, with only 3000 remaining.

"The tickets for the ceremonies are expensive but those for sports events are much cheaper," Bhanot said.

He dismissed fears of black marketing and counterfeiting of tickets.

"Tickets are being given only to those with identity proofs," he said.

"Also, the tickets cannot be counterfeited as they have been published with great care at the national security press where currency notes are printed."

If you have their sports package it's free. If you don't, it's $85 to access the channels.

Hooray for it being free on Fox with a sports subscription. I always enjoy the Commonwealth games as Australia dominate!
Is it worth it's own temporary forum or not big enough to warrant it?

Anymore news. Seems to be a very low key build up to these games.

I for one love the "Comies", watching Australia top the medal count. Although these games might be tough to do so with the poms preparing for London 2012 and India were certainly on the rise in the last games and with it being in their back yard expect them to medal well.

I was surprised in melbourne how strong the Indian boxing team was - didn't think India was a boxing super power. From memory i think they weren't bad in the weightlifting either.

These Commonwealth Games appear doomed to failure - the roof in the weightlifting/wrestling hall has collapsed, a bridge to the main arena has collapsed, the athletes village is unlivable, and security is farcical at best.

There's reports England and Canada are set to withdraw completely from the games, and Scotland's already delayed their arrival to Delhi.

If they do, I'd expect Australia and New Zealand to follow, meaning the games will pretty much disintegrate. However, the swimmers may not necessarily get a 2 week holiday with a 4 nations swim meet between Australia, New Zealand, England and Canada possibly going ahead in lieu of the games should they pull out.

It's fair enough should we all pull out... but this will severely dent relations between us and India and will isolate them further.

Let's face it, the building not up to standards is just a perfect cover to everyone's security fears and this will bring further claim to India being an extremist country.

Some rough political times ahead...

They've given them 48 hours.... Gee, that'll help.... Seeing as they've had 7 years to get ready already I hardly think an extra 48 hours will help...

Reminds me of high school and preparing for an exam the night before....

Pretty damning stuff in this BBC report http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11395475

Commonwealth Games Canada's president told the BBC that Indian officials had been "indifferent bordering on intransigent" in tackling the issues.

The state of the athletes' village has come in for criticism, with complaints of flooding, rooms soiled by excrement and stray dogs sleeping on some beds.

1. Athletes' village - Indian media reports only 18 of 34 towers are completed
2. Yamuna River - flooded in worst monsoon rain for 30 years, leaving pools attracting mosquitoes
3. Nehru Stadium - part of false ceiling collapsed in weightlifting area
4. Bridge leading to the Nehru Stadium - collapsed on Tuesday
5. Jama Masjid Mosque - Two tourists injured in shooting near mosque, Indian Mujahideen threatens more attacks
6. Shivaji Stadium - no longer to be used as a venue because it was not going to be ready in time
7. Yamuna Sports Complex - roof damaged by heavy rain in July
