PHILH’S SA SUMMER SPORTS RANKINGS – WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 1ST 2010

What a week for the South Australian Sporting Teams. Of the six sides that played four had winning weekends and one drew their series leaving the Lady Reds the only overall losers.

For those wondering how I rank the teams I give each side a score out of 10 for their weekend performance and then a score out of 10 for their overall standings. These two criteria are then weighted to produce a score out of 50. As you will see some scores this week have been pretty close.

1) ADELAIDE UNITED (A-League - Soccer) - (41.5 points)
Ranking Last Week - 2nd
Last Weekend – Beat Gold Coast United 2-1 in front of 12,000 at Hindmarsh
Standings – 2nd behind Brisbane Roar (6pts back with 2 games in hand, 7pts ahead of 3rd placed Gold Coast)
Upcoming – Sunday Afternoon game at Wellington Phoenix (in Christchurch)
Comments – Big win in a big game that gives United a great shot at a top 2 finish. Speaking of great shots, how about the deft goal assist from Flores or even the Gold Coast goal, a rocket from outside the box. Given how badly the Phoenix play away from Wellington hopes are high that the trip to Christchurch’s AMI Stadium .. that’s “A..M..I” not “Amy” Stadium will bring a 3rd straight 3 points for the Reds.

2) ADELAIDE BITE (ABL - Baseball) – (41 points)
Ranking Last Week – 1st
Last Weekend – Split home stand v Perth Heat winning both games in Saturday doubleheader after losing the matches on Thursday and Friday,
Standings – 8-4 record, tied 1st place with Sydney Blue Sox
Upcoming – 4 game series in Canberra v last placed Cavalry (If the rain doesn’t play havoc with the schedule).
Comment –Bite fans may be up in arms they lost first place but its tight at the top and if you want a number 1 ranking you need to win the series at home. Interesting scheduling to play a 11am game on Thursday, the Bite promoting it as a cheap school excursion.

3) SOUTHERN SCORPIONS (Cricket Australia - Women) – (39.5 points)
Ranking Last Week – 3rd
Last Weekend – Won all three games against Tasmania at home. That’s six in a row to the Scorpions who are ready to challenge for #1 if United and Bite make a false movep.
Standings – WNCL 2-1 4th , T20 5-1 2nd
Upcoming – No games this week. Remember the Canberra Comets who played in the one day series a few years back? Well the ladies version the ACT Meteors are still around and play three games at Glandore Oval December 10-12.
Comment – With a rest it’s a big chance in a couple of weeks for the Scorpions to collect some more points before some big matches against the league leaders.

4) SOUTHERN REDBACKS (Cricket Australia – Men) – (25.5 points)
Ranking Last Week – 5th
Last Weekend – What an amazing five days of first class cricket. The Redbacks were bound for the basement in these ratings after being all knocked out for 55 in their first Sheffield Shield innings. However forced to follow on, they showed great composure and character to not only save the game but turn almost guaranteed defeat into what could be a season defining win. Then they backed it up with the one day upset of the season, taming the previously unbeaten Tigers on the Tassie turf.
Standings – Sheffield Shield up from last to 4th with 10 pts from 4 games. One Day up from last to 5th with a 2-3 record.
Upcoming – Two One Day games first v Victoria in Geelong on Saturday then v NSW at the SCG next week.
Comment – A one off week to remember or the start of a special season? ….. stay tuned!

5) ADELAIDE 36'ERS (NBL – Basketball) – 20 points
Ranking Last Week – 4th
Last Weekend – No Games
Standings – 2-5 (6th out of 9 clubs)
Upcoming –Massive Match v Townsville Crocs at the Done Friday Night.
Comment – In what was an overall winning weekend for SA teams it was not a good time to lay idle.
Looks like the NBL is running with a top 4, Currently the Crocs hold that 4th spot with the 36’ers 2 ½ games back, that is what makes Friday’s game so critical.

6) ADELAIDE LIGHTNING (WNBL – Basketball) – 19 points
Ranking Last Week – 6th
Last Weekend - Defeated Townsville Fire 82-60 for their second victory of the season
Standings – 2nd last 2-6
Upcoming – Host Canberra at Wayville on Sunday
Comment – Important win to keep Lighting 2 ½ games out of the finals but Canberra are the league leaders and even at home it will be a big challenge.

7) ADELAIDE UNITED LADY REDS (W-League, Soccer)
- Last Weekend – Lost 0-4 to Melbourne Victory at Hindmarsh last week.
- Standing – Last in W League with 0 points from 4 games
- Upcoming – Play Saturday at Canberra United.
- Comment – Looks like a long year.

Townsville a major chance to overcome the Sixers this weekend. A LOT of options for an undersized Adelaide to cover.

36ers are favourites for some reason, I took the Crocs line as I think the 36ers will lose anyway.

That completely befuddled also, RM. I just can't see it whichever angle I look at it.

Its going to be carnage

- Only winners 36'ers and Redbacks (with one game to go)
- United, Lady Reds, Bite and Lightning all went down
- Scorpions didnt play

Could the Scorpions claim top spot without playing a game ? Check out the new rankings out Thursday.
