Amazing viewing. All that happened before the cobble stones.

Does that mean Richie Porte will be lead rider for Sky? If so, is he a chance to win the whole thing?

Brilliant day's racing. I've long wanted days where time was taken from contenders on days other than mountains and time trials. In the last few years we've seen a few descents where it's been possible but a stage like this should appear every year from now on.

Porte will definitely be Sky's team leader. The entire team is set up to work towards the yellow and apart from going for wins in breakaways they don't have many options. Porte is probably not ready to seriously challenge for the win, but he is a chance at the podium. He's sitting in about 3rd or 4th among the contenders right now. Monday is the first serious mountain stage, that's when we'll learn how strong everyone is.

Cavendish, Andy Schleck and Froome out already. Hard to remember this sort of carnage so early.

Contador looked threatening in the first of the climbs last night. Nimbali looked comfortable enough keeping with him. Porte looked to be giving everything and did well to keep within a few seconds at the end, but looks ominous for a race of two. A long way to go...

Contador abandons the Tour ... apparently crashed when his frame snapped.

Will be watching for more news on this one, but sounds frightening. They were saying the skid marks were 70m long but it was on a climb or something? Can't imagine he was travelling fast enough to carry that momentum forward so must have slipped backwards if that's true.

Porte now must give himself a huge chance to podium. Will have to look at what Nibali and Valverde have done in time trials because the kid can seriously time trial. If he gets close to them he might blow them away. If those guys are weak at the time trial then he might takes minutes. Thought he actually looked the strongest when responding to Nibali's attack but perhaps misjudged it and just slipped back near the line. On the longer, tougher climbs the world might be different and Nibali himself might just find his form falling away as he looks super strong right now. When Froome crashed out I gave Richie little chance of beating both Nibali and Contador, never mind the other strong men who might yet fire a shot but now with Contador gone he's only got to make time on Nibali while not losing to the others.
