Kobe Bryant today posted the second highest indiviual score in NBA history with 81 points against the Raptors, his match stats as follows:

Mins FGM-FGA 3PM-3PA FTM-FTA RB's Ass. Fl Stl TO B Points

41:56 28-46 7-13 17-20 6 2 1 3 3 1 81

Wouldn't expect to see that topped for a while, his team the LA Lakers ended up winning the encounter with a score of 121 to Toronto's 104.

F@#$ me with the rough end of a pineapple!

This coming after a 62 point game earlier in the season.

Kobe might finally get the scoring title he's coveted for so long.

Got to hand it to him Magpiespower, that is an amazing performance.
55 of the points coming after half time.

Pehaps its time he started coveting a championship not made on Shaq's back instead of individual awards?
Proabably why LA aren't even close to the team the used to be.

He still has a lower Field Goal % than Al Iverson this season, but if you keep jacking them up they're going to hit occasionally.
His Assists aren't even close to Al as well (about 3 less pg by memory), christ imagine if Al was as tall as Kobe how good he would be?

Also have a look at the Playoff careers of both players, yes Kobe might have won a ring or two on Shaq's back but you only have to look at his stats to see how he goes backwards big time in the playoffs (drops down to about 22ppg). Al's output actually improves and goes up to 30ppg.

The "Answer" is having yet another stellar year, and sitting back here in my armchair, I would always pick him over Kobe as much for his ticker as anything else ...

He never ceases to amaze me, smallest ever MVP.
Playing NBA at 6 foot would be like playing NBL as a 3 footer, keeps copping hits and getting back up, plays with heaps of injuries and is always productive.

Haven't checked his stats this year, but I'd suggest his FG clip and APG are both significantly upthis year (hell maybe even his RPG) and he was already awesome before this season!! lol

Absolutely ORDB.

Faced with keeping a superstar for the next 10 years and building around him or keeping a fat malcontent who refused to accept that the focus of the team had to change, the Lakers made the right decision.

He still has a lower Field Goal % than Al Iverson this season.

Barely.

AI - .453
Kobe - .452

but if you keep jacking them up they're going to hit occasionally

Like those years when AI shot below .400?

His Assists aren't even close to Al as well (about 3 less pg by memory)

One would expect a point guard to dish off a few more assists.

he goes backwards big time in the playoffs (drops down to about 22ppg).

Wouldn't say 0.5ppg is backwards big time.

Heya MP,
I disagree with ya about the Lakers decion and IMHO the way they've gone since Shaq left has vindicated that.
Thans for pointing out the difference in FG%, it was quite a bit different to that last time I looked, at least Im still right! (just! lol)
In regard to playoffs performance, it was mainly a comparison between how Kobe's stats go as opposed to AI.
I don't know the exact stats but while Kobe goes backward AI goes about 6-7ppg forwards.

Gotta stick up for Kobe!

Especially when the Lakers are just an injury/rape charge away from the lottery!

I was gutted when Shaq walked because I knew it was the last time LA would challenge for a championship for 5-6 years at least.

Apparently Buss is gonna go pretty hard at the free-agents this off-season but IIRC, most of the big guns on offer have already re-signed with their teams.

AI's ppg jumps from just under 28 to a shade over 30 come playoff time whereas Kobe's pretty much stays the same.

Having said that, AI has pretty much done it by himself in Philly, especially on offence. At the same time, Kobe (rightly) had to defer to Shaq (at least until their last season together when the Lakers clearly became Kobe's team, a fact Shaq stubbornly refused to admit - they should have gone and had a chat to Magic and Kareem about this!)

Kobe v AI?

I'm taking Kobe, mainly because he gets the job done at both ends of the floor.

And because he's a Laker. :D
