Its very cheap to fly from Vietnam to Japan these days if you wanted to combine the 2.

Danang in central Vietnam has just recently upgraded its airport to become an international port and flights to there from KL were starting around $50 and they were also doing flights out on Jetstar to Osaka for about $100-$150.

Laos is quite hard and expensive to access via plane from Vietnam and the bus is a very long 24 hour bus that probably wouldnt be overly practical with small kids. Its best access by flights from Thailand or via border crossing at the friendship bridge in the north (flight to Udon Thani then hire a car and driver to Vientiane).

As for tubing, I have been 3 times before and its amazing, hoping the poor media doesnt impact it too much.

All very good points. Actually thinking of combining Hong Kong & Macau with Vietnam given the young kids thing.

Hong Kong great for kids, been back several times. Macau is awesome aswell but not heaps to do for kids. Still worth a couple of days to look around. The ride between HK and Macau is a quite pleasant ride, only a short boat trip away but surprising how many people go to HK but dont visit Macau

Although my original post was about doing something more adventure based, the reality of young kids means I have to temper my plans, so HK, Macau and Vietnam seem the logical choice.

I've heard the boat ride between HK and Macau is a great way to see the harbour too. Only really keen for 1 day in Macau just to check the place out and have a bit of a punt.

There are a few walks you can do in HK which look amazing.

Any other pointers from your experience mate?

Some great walks around the Peak, nice flat, safe walk only 40-50 minutes, gives great views of HK, all the restaurants up there offer excellant views especially at night. HK park is an awesome walk, surrounded by skyscrapers its a huge free park with water features and stacks of greenery it also has a huge aviary which has a treetop walkway and you are surrounded by birds. For kids Disneyland and Ocean Park are a must, plenty of fantastic markets and beaches on HK island, all the transport is fantastic and cheap. Ngong Ping village is pretty cool as is the cablecar ride and the giant Buddha and monastery are awesome. If you love a punt try to get to one of the race meets especially Happy Valley, the meets are wednesday nights and attract crowds of 80,000 plus, tourist can buy a pass for about $HK150, gets you VIP access in the grandstands and you can walk around near the finishing line, awesome night out. Plenty of other parks, museums and shopping. If you want a day excursion you can go to Macau which has great architecture and unreal casinos, can also take a boat up the pearl river or we cross the border into China by train and head to Shenzhen or Guangzhou, both are excellant for a look and easy and cheap to get to.
Have been to HK heaps and love the place, never grow tired of it and always find new sights.
The food is unbelievable and people are great.
PM me if you need any help or want more info
