Telstra, not going to use my sim card over there, research indicates you can buy sim cards over there pretty cheap but can't seem to find any details on them.

Haven’t been to Bali but when I went to Japan I got a mobile wifi modem instead of a SIM card.

I almost never make phone calls though (would FaceTime instead) so it was a better option for me

I’m with Telstra and despite being a regular to Bali and other overseas destinations I’ve never purchased a SIM card. Telstra do some pretty good data packages and between that and the free Wi-fi available we always get by

Cheers, just checked out their offering and $5 a day for 200MB seems a pretty good deal, only there 7 days...use that with wifi should get me by.

@Ducthy is into the $2.60 Bin Tangs.

If my numbers are right he'll spend about $260 on Bin Tang and bring home 5kg he didn't take with him.

May last year when I was there I found very few shops selling stubbies under $2.

Hey Gents, sadly it ended up being a very short trip, arrived Wednesday night at 9.30pm and was back home [via Perth] 48 hours later due to my MIL becoming sick and we lost her yesterday. Fortunately we got home in time to speak to her before deteriorating, thankfully to some outstanding hotel staff who arranged flights and transport to the airport. Will post about my brief experiences separately.

Shit, sorry to hear Dutchy - you might be able to claim your unexpected cancellation on your travel insurance, if her passing was unexpected and not due to an existing illness.

OK my brief experience of Bali, all of about 36 hours :)

Rocked up to our hotel in Legian, straight to the bar, charged us $5.50 for a bintang...what???! despite being late we went for a walk down the street, found a small bar called uncle norms and half that price.

I did a fair bit of research so it was pretty much what I expected, really friendly people, happy to banter and bargain when you are in their shops, the employees at our hotel couldn't do enough for us. You can literally buy a bintang anywhere, even in the clothes shops...wish that was the case at Marion when following the Mrs around shopping.

I look forward to going back, now that I've had a taste, but will defintely stay further out, Legian is walking distance to Kuta and way too busy for my liking, Im sure there are plenty of more laid back spots. Have heard of private Villa's etc that have pricked my interest.

At the end of the day it is still a 3rd world country so I can see the need to be careful, but also a fun relaxed place and can see the appeal for many Aussies looking to get away from reality for a while.

Nah mate, along with January its the worst, right in the middle of wet season.
Great time to travel to Thailand though as they're on different sides of the equator.

April to late September/early October is the best time to visit Bali.
January/February can be quite wet as it’s the rain season but temperatures will be around 28 degrees and I’ve been there several times in February and the rain has been hit or miss at times.
