Travel insurance...get some

Holidays, where, to go, how to get there, travel stories.

Travel insurance...get some

Postby JAS » Sat Sep 04, 2010 9:46 pm

It really isn't worth being a skinflint and not bothering to get some.

In the space of two weeks we've had these 3 stories making the headlines...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-11042951
A Portsmouth man remains in a critical condition in hospital after he fell off a balcony while on holiday in Ibiza.
Ryan Elley, 20, broke his back in three places, punctured his lung and fractured his skull in the fall in Playa d'en Bossa on 9 August...
...He did not have travel insurance and a campaign by his family and friends has now raised the £15,000 needed for an air ambulance to fly him home.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11053360
A woman who fell from a balcony while on her honeymoon in Corfu has arrived back in the UK.
Carrie Dudbridge, 27, from Lewisham, south-east London, fractured her spine in three places when she fell about 30ft on 15 August on the Greek island.
Her husband, Michael, launched an appeal to raise funds to fly her home as they did not have travel insurance...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11170392
A British man is now stranded in Thailand after being paralysed in a road accident, his family have said.
Tom Moss, 26, from Tooting, south London, was left nearly blind and unable to move from the neck down after his moped hit a lorry and two cars.
Mr Moss did not have travel insurance, so is now stuck in hospital as his family tries to raise the £35,000 needed to fly him back home...

If nothing else don't put your family and friends through the trauma of having to raise the money to get you back.

Any one who doesn't get it shouldn't be travelling end of story.

Have just done a quick search on the net and came across this one.

http://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au

It was about $30 cheaper than nomad and appears to be the same if not better in a lot of the coverage.

It is underwritten by Lloyds.

Anyone had any experiences with them?

I always pay for trips on my VISA card and take the free travel insurance backed by Zurich.
It works out fairly cheap and matches up, in the details, fairly well with other offerings - at least at the level for gold card users.
(I haven't looked at standard or Platinum card levels for comparison.)

Travel Insurance saved me an approx. 600 Euro ambulance/hospital bill in Munich at Oktoberfest. And that was only a 2km ambo ride and 8 stitches in my head.

Travel insurance for me and my girlfriend was $600 for 12 months through world nomads.

They didn't even ask too many questions about my state of inhebriation when the T&C's clearly stated booze and drug affercted incidents were a pay out no no :D :drinkers:

Having had some experience working in the Airline / Travel industry the amount of people that travel and have no idea on some of the key elements of having a good trip is beyond belief.

Insurance is the most important factor when travelling overseas. Second would be financials.

I've always used World Nomads too. Claimed for x-rays/treatment etc for a broken wrist due to a motorbike accident, however, my claim stated I was in a bicycle accident

Mother in law had a stroke while on a cruise, had travel insurance but they've rejected paying anything out as she had high blood pressure and it wasn't declared on the travel insurance form. She'll probably now be out of pocket around 10k because of it.
So another lesson is to not only get travel insurance but to make sure you have everything declared beforehand.
