Round the world trip

Postby whufc » Thu May 29, 2014 10:49 am

Hey guys, just some advice on organising a Europen/USA trip for me and the wife.

We are working with a fairly strict budget but essentially we wont to spend 25 days on Holidays

With roughly

4 days in London
1 day in Bruges
2 days in Paris
3 days in Rome
3 days in Barcelona
3 days in ???????
5 days in New York
4 days in Los Angeles

Happy to travel by train throughout Europe if it is cheaper.

You just wanted to tell us you're travelling, you could've got all that info from Sam. ;)

Too much time spent in transit for such a short trip.

My advice is to spend the 25 days in a couple of countries and soak up what they have to offer.

I agree unfortunately the holiday is coming from an inheritance my wife has gotten so im not carrying a lot of weight when it comes to creating the intinery.

She is dead set on seeing as many highlights in as least as time as possible.

So any advice I can get on how to do this, what to avoid, what are the must sees etc etc.

Surely a trip to West Ham FC. Is on the cards.....

River cruise in London is a must IMO. Gives an overview of the sights then you can go back to the ones that interest you in more detail later.

Also didn't mind the tour of Lords either. It's not overly impressive but purely from the historical point of view. Bit of a trek from the nearest tube station though. Abbey Road is not far away either and still plenty of spuds are lining up to have some hippy dude take a photo of you using a zebra crossing that 50 odd years ago was further up the road when 4 lads from Liverpool did the same thing....

Tell her she runs the risk of coming back and feeling like she spent her whole holiday in airports.

Many people make the mistake of cramming in too many big cities in a short trip.

Five days in New York is good though, will give you a chance to do a day trip out to Boston where you can convince her to pay a visit to Fenway Park ;)

Fly into cities early in the day, dump your backpacks at reception, load up on good coffee and go for a wander. Get to your bearings straight up and never trust a woman's sense of direction.

Totally agree with you,

im happy to extend the holiday to more like 30 days but she wants a max of 25.

Im trying to tread very careful making sure she doesn't feel like im taking over the holiday yet not letting her make rookie errors.

From New York City, it's only about 6 1/2 hours to Niagara Falls, and about 8 hours to Toronto. Plenty of awesome stuff to see up there.

Yeah we both don't sleep a whole lot so early starts and late finished aren't a big deal, I generally run of 5 hours sleep a day and she is about the same.

She is quite a sporty person so she is extremely keen to see either a NBA, MLB or NFL game.

She knows a West Ham game is an absolute must as well.

We have a mate who lives in Toronto so that will probably be a separate trip next year which we will take the kids with as well.

Good call mate. Do it in the winter too, so you and the kids can play in the snow. You get used to the cold pretty quickly too.

During the winter months, you can go behind the Horseshoe Falls. That was one hell of an experience.

We will be leaving the kids with her mother for the entirety of our trip, I think the 25 days mark is about the most her mum can squeeze of work for that period.

I know it's out of your control whufc, but you're going to be one very tired individual.

I hope for your sake you're not too tired to enjoy it.

But FWIW, I'd take couple of days off LA and chuck them onto NYC. A lot of LA is a dive and not worth more than 48 hours, and we didn't see enough of NYC in the 10 days we were there.

I know that you want to see more places but for a 25 day trip I would encourage a river cruise through Europe. That way you avoid all the airport time, you travel as you sleep and the new port is there when you wake up. Throw in the fact that all your meals and entertainment is supplied etc. and you would be much more relaxed. You could do a 10-14 day river cruise and then fly to a couple more places either before or after.

Cheers
