I'm planning on taking the missus on a small holiday sometime in the next 6 months, but only have about $2,500 to do it with.

Im looking at Fiji, and it comes pretty close to that budget, but thats without spending money, and extras. Does anyone have any inside info on travel deals, or know of cheaper ways to go about things? I've never traveled in my life.

She already has one. I'll need to get one though. Even if she didnt, having it all planned and ready to go would be a big enough surprise for her.

Think I may be able to help..... went through a similar process a few years back.

I am fortunate to acquire frequent flyer points via work, so from my perspective flights just cost me more points & not more $$$.

With that in mind, I found that you can more or less have a holiday twice as long in say Phuket, than Fiji - when you factor in Hotels, Food, Drink & Activities. Sure its a longer flight, but not by much.

I've not been to Bali, but I strongly suspect (as I am doing the research for a 2015 holiday) that you will find again that Hotels etc are way cheaper than Fiji.

That's not a knock to Fiji - I've been there too, albeit 25 years ago. Liked the place but when you line it up - Thailand & most likely Bali are cheaper than Fiji

Mrs.Boon has been keen for a Bali trip for years. I keep suggesting we just go on a end of season footy trip with a country club to Victor and save our money. Will be about the same I'd imagine. Streets full of pissed up 20-somethings looking to get laid and then have a shitty tattoo done to commemorate the root.

Cambodia. Air Asia flights there, cheap accommodation, good street food, cheap buses between cities. Great country.

Looking at some deals for Hamilton Island. Has anyone been there? If so, whats your opinion on the place?

Ive been to Fiji, Thailand and Bali and $2500 wont get you far in Fiji, beautiful country and the Fijians are extremely friendly but i would compare the prices to going the goldcoast.

Bali you can get a real nice resort and spending money for that 2.5k. Not all of Bali is over run by yobos. I stayed in Sanur and came across maybe 10 Aussies. Majority of Dutsch tourists when i was there or you can go in land see even less Aussies.

Cant seperate Thailand and Bali IMO, if i chose to go back I would chose Bali purely because its a shorter flight haha

Fiji certainly is a winner though
