Great Ocean Road and back in five days

Postby whufc » Tue Mar 15, 2016 3:03 pm

There may already be a topic but im too lazy to look lol.

Me and the misses have a bit of time of work in April and are planning to do the great ocean road in April. We are looking at doing a dirt cheap holiday, hopefully staying in tent sites at caravan parks with our two person swag in the back of her station wagon.

We have five spare days so far the itinerary is:

Saturday- Cudlee Creek-Robe (3hr 45min)
Sunday- Robe- Port Fairy/Warrnambool (3hr 11min)
Monday- Port Fairy- Lorne (2hr 30min)
Tues- Lorne- Mount Gambier (4hr)
Wed- Mt Gambier- Cudlee Creek (4hr)

Should we pre book all our camp sites or just rock up on the day?
Will see much of the good stuff using that itinerary?
Any other tips and advice?

Don't go by those times, always allow yourself extra travelling time as there are long stretches without overtaking and you can get stuck behind foreign tourists or caravans doing 40km/h for long periods. We did it again in January and got stuck behind traffic for over an hour in some stretches.
Definately check out the 12 Apostles whilst the remaining few still survive and there are also plenty of coves and shipwrecks along that stretch just out of Port Campbell. There is a great little caravan park at Peterborough that is really cheap and has awesome free facilities such as BBQ's, kitchen and games room aswell as a playground that is good for kids. Right next door to a pretty nice pub that does good feeds.

Spent 4 or 5 nights along that stretch going back a few years now. The highlights were Loch Ard Gorge and Otway national park (melba's gully, triplet falls etc). Also enjoyed seeing the 'Round the Twist' lighthouse. The majority of the stops/lookouts along the way were great. We were there over xmas/ny, so the bigger towns were insanely busy so didn't explore them too much.

Spent 5 days that way 28 weeks ago.
Did Lorne and Torquay. Great place. Some great walking trails around Lorne if your into that thing., and the clothes shopping in Torquay is first class. Go 1 street off the main road to the factory outlets.
Came home after that 5 days engaged and with a kid on the way.

Yeah plan on leaving each day around 8am and getting to our next destination by 5pm meaning around 3-4 hours driving and 4-5 hours of stops sightseeing etc etc

Not sure if your'e that way inclined* but the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in Warrnambool is worth a look. It's like a mini sovereign hill. They also do a light/laser show at night about the local shipwrecks.

Also check out Otway National Park and the Otway fly.

Both of these are discounted if you pre-purchase with the RAA 8)

https://www.raa.com.au/travel/member-holiday-savings/ticket/914/by-day-and-by-night-entry-and-shipwrecked-show

Driving times, as per everyone else, you've got buckleys chance of actually getting through without getting stuck behind a bloody caravan doing 60.

School holidays in Victoria until the 10th of April so if you're travelling then, definitely book your camping spots in advance.

Thanks heaps FC

We are not leaving until the 16th so thinking we might take our chances so then we are not restricted to much to having to be in certain places
Definately want to do Otway for sure

I have to get the misses RAA roadside assistance she lives in Cudlee creek but stupidly enough doesn't have any

I'm not great with cars so said I will get it for her in time for the trip

We've just completed a week in Ballarat and then a week in Warrnambool.

Drove to Warrnambool via Geelong and Anglesea along the Great Ocean Rd.

We had a pretty cruisy drive along the coast and didn't really get held up at all.

The only time we really had to slow down was going in to each town along the way.

Even the day we did the Apostles etc it wasn't too bad.

Stop at Timboon and check out the distillery if you like whisky
