Alice Springs

Heading to Alice Springs on Monday for a week. Any tips on places to go? Places to avoid? Have been told it to go out at night at all, and don't walk anywhere, always get a taxi. Any other advice?
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Avoid Centrelink ;)

Telegraph Station is worth a look. Also if you can head out west towards Hermannsburg/Mt Zeil with several short bush walks (no more than 30 minutes) to Ellery Creek big Hole and Standley Chasm
