Carbon Tax. Wage costs. Large car market dropping.

If you work at Holdens or one of their parts suppliers, start to upskill now.

Mitsubishi closed because no-one buys them, Holdens are always number 1 or 2 in this country & are also exporting.

I work at Holden Booney, started a uni degree a coupla years ago but will take another few years part time to complete. Im not worried bout Holden closing tho, just the usual round of scare mongering from the media on an otherwise slow news day, whilst the heads of the company and governement are all chasing investment.

A slow news day? It's not every day our Premier heads to the US to speak to GM's chief.
Pretty important I'd think.

Carr has bailed out Ford and apparently Holden is striking a similar deal with Gillard.

When Mitsubishi lost the export contract to the US on the 380 their fate was sealed. I feel Holden are in a stronger position than Mitsubishi were. These factors make me feel Holden will continue as is for another generation:

- it's such an iconic Australian brand (despite being foreign owned) that has value for GMH
- as Centurion said, Australians like to buy Holdens albiet in decreasing numbers
- I think here is strategic value for the Government in retaining end to end vehicle design and manufacture in Australia (that doesn't mean all 3 remaining manufactuers will stay)
In between signatures .....

They've been smart enough to start manufacturing a small/medium alternative in the Cruze also given that the arse is falling out of the family sedan market.

i think the future is bleak for GMH

i dont think the govt should keep bailing the car manufacturers out - and if we do give GMH some money we would want a guarantee that they are gonna stick around for 30+ years and if they leave they can pay us back

if the Government/s bail out Holden, I dont think its unreasonable that they be given a number of U.S GM Shares as compensation.

Pretty important when we, as a state, are so much in debt that our daily interest bill is $2m.

Where will the government of the day ( perhaps not the incumbent labor in 4 years time ) begin to find the $200m reportedly needed for the bail out?

Instead of bailouts why doesn't the state government ONLY buy local cars?

The increasing amount of Camrys with Government plates is ridiculous

Agreed, if our locally made cars are good enough for US police departments and Shieks in Saudi Arabia, I'm sure they're good enough for our pollies :?

Initial cost to buy, on going maintenance, running costs, re-sale value.

You want them to waste more money?

( Don't rely on anything American Law enforcement agencies do to use as a guide, nor Saudi shieks who have more cash than Australia itself. )
