Thought I'd finally add to this thread after having a look at it for a while. I'm 5'11, and play competitive footy. I managed to develop myself a decent case of Osteitis Pubis around April-May 2009 and played on, ended up having six months off physical activity completely, but kept eating and drinking the same amount. Took a while to rehab and came back to play the second half of this season (with limited training due to managing the OP) but still with the weight I hadn't worked off.

When I joined my gym on September 15th this year to get myself back to a decent playing weight, I was 98.4kg, up from about 85kg which I was before the injury.

Since, I've changed my diet slightly, been doing cardio at the gym 3-4 times a week, and after 8 weeks am down to 92.0kg.

I'm down to 80.4, and I'm hoping to get it under 80 before Christmas hits...

It's always difficult to get much lower than this, but I figure with me being a bachelor, and therefore being an honorary holiday "Uncle" to most of my mates kids, I will have to indulge in a lot of christmas feasts... :D

i'm currently 99kg and 6'2
Trying to get to 95kg in time for New Year.

In 2008 i was 74kg
I went from 85kg to 74kg in 4 weeks for sporting reasons.

Then got a job in an office and went from 74 to 90 over a 6 month period then over the next year and a bit 10kg snuck up on me.

The key to losing weight is no carbs after 3pm, absolute minimum dairy, no soft drinks or junk food.
Then the extremes (if you're serious) no bacon or anything fried, no alcohol, no piece of meat bigger than palm of your hand, only drink water.

Think its because carbs should be used as an energy source and i think by eating it late in the day its harder to break down as your metabolism slows down around 6pm i think?

Thats why most intense weight loss programs limit intakes of carbs. However this usually results in loss of strength & muscle mass rather than body fat.
People looking to lower body fat levels need to adopt a balanced, long term strategy. Target excess sources of "empty" KJ's (i.e foods which provide KJs but few nutrients) such as alcohol, high fat foods, refined carbs and maintain an adequate intake of nutrient dense carbs and protein.

Have set myself a more challenging goal...

Am going to compete locally, in something called a marathon...

I believe it is where you run for an extended period, for no particular reason.

The event is Australia Day, and I'd like to get to 75-77kgs...

Agree with this. I am the same height and weight but if I was 74kg I would look anorexic. I think 90kg would look right.

Re: WEIGHT LOSS + the challenge

I've always had a slim build and have been a vegetarian for over twenty years so I've never really had to worry about my weight. However I'd like to applaud and maybe provide inspiration to all those on here trying to lose weight for one reason or another.

Around six years ago I lived in the suburbs and cycled virtually everywhere and also worked in landscaping. This lifestyle kept me very fit and trim. I then moved up to the hills and found cycling too dangerous on the narrow winding roads so I ended up driving or bussing it everywhere. I also switched to a primarily deskbound job. This meant I lost heaps of fitness and also developed a bit of a belly.

So about six months ago I decided to try to get some fitness back by jogging around the block first thing every weekday morning. I bought a $50 pair of jogging shoes and set the alarm clock for 15 minutes earlier than usual and started in earnest in the middle of the dark winter. Just to set the scene - living in a hilly area means my round-the-block run is mild downhill then steep downhill then mild uphill then steep uphill then mild uphill then mild downhill. Needless to say the first mild downhill section was a doddle but boy did I find the mild uphill hard going. I made it about halfway round the block before almost collapsing, then walked the rest of the way, arriving home breathing normally. I stayed at this level for a week or two then gradually increased my distance each week until after about three months I could do the whole block jogging. I haven't increased my load since then although I'm thinking about doing twice round the block after the festive season is over.

I've increased my fitness level heaps and the belly has gone away. I also feel more invigorated when I arrive at work, and running for a bus on the flat in town is really easy now - I barely notice it! I've also started doing a bit of weights work at home in the evenings which has also helped.

I hope my story demonstrates that, for me anyway, better fitness can be attained pretty cheaply and conveniently.
