RUOK? Day

Postby Sky Pilot » Thu Sep 13, 2012 2:01 pm

Despite all the publicity about this concept and the significance of trying to offer support to people in our own loops, no one has bothered to call me up and ask if I'm okay. My friends and rellies would all know the stress I am under with Essendon in moth balls, Boston Red Sox on the bottom of the AL East and the WWT Eagles on a knife edge. I'm barely making from one day to the next. Anyone else stressing out? If so the we should be comforting each other via this thread.

It's some sort of politically correct promotion to encourage people to ring up or front up anyone close to them and ask them if they are okay. Now I'm no expert in mental illness or depression but people behind this concept reckon it will help. All the pollies in the house of reps question time have the approved yellow sticker on their lapel right now. Kate Ellis has hers on her suspenders belt I think because she is showing more leg the Ladt GaGa at a Royal concert

It's easy to mock these inititatives but every little bit helps in removing the stigma of the illness of depression. And the stigma is out there still alive and well I reckon.

I know that sounds holier than thou but suicide is so common, more common than most people think.

Not that I have asked anybody RUOK today

I do wonder whether it works as a campaign. I was going to bring it up but chose not to do so due to taste.
However, as SP has done it in such an irreverent fashion, I thought I'd respond.
It's hard enough to approach a friend to discuss things normally, so doing it on a day an already depressed person knows is part of a campaign could have unintended ramifications. It could also appear patronising.
I have seen a lot of people asking RUOK? on Facebook, but putting a status up and actually taking direct action to ask someone is entirely different. I wonder if this, as good intentioned as it is, is just a feel good campaign that may have run its course?
The other question is, if you are brave enough to approach someone and ask that tough question, why do you need a day to do so?
Those of you who know me, know I'm passionate about this topic, so I do not take this debate lightly.

On a 'brighter' note, a work mate of mine who has gone through a rough time actually brought up his story with me today and told me he is doing really well right now. As a result of RUOK day? I'm not sure. All I know is that it was good to chat and know that he is on the improve.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

I would be very ok if I saw Kate Ellis' suspenders.
Alexander Downer's, not so much.

Facebook is an interesting part of this. I am a "friend" with a family friend who clearly is struggling with her current lot in life not that I think she thinks she is depressed. She seems all over the shop but I only base that on her facebook posts so who am I to know really.

Regardless of what her true medical condition is, she posts updates lots of times per day and most of them prompt someone to respond with RUOK?

I had never really thought of that in the context of the RUOK initiative before but I am sure those posts are helping her. I think she could do with some more help personally but that's another issue.

Is Facebook therapy of sorts for people in need? is it filling a void?

My sister in law, has many issues with regards to depression linked to her being bipolar. She freely admits that when she is having a "down day" she will vent on facebook, not as a way of seeking attention but as a way of getting her feelings out. Once she has done this she says that it does help her to be able to put her thoughts (some are very dark) into the open.

Though her posts are private amongst her friends/family so we are aware and understand her need to vent in this way.

Obviously there are some who want attention, seek validation from others etc, but in the old Sis-in-laws case it is quite a positive.

I was walking past some units on Anzac Highway this morning. Some elderly guy was sitting on the steps with a carton of red tins while having a smoke. Clearly this man was okay.
