Nope. I'll be doing the Summitt to Sea 34km Sunday though.

After running 12km today, there is NO WAY I could run 34. I reckon I could do 21 but I'd have to go much slower because at the 8-9km mark I was ready to stop. Mind you, we've had a crook boy at home all week and I was up at 12, 2 and 5 to him. Not the ideal prep!

You'd be surprised what you can achieve! Runs like this one I take pace out of the equation completely and just worry about finishing

True. My hips and groins were screaming at me to stop, hence I don't think I'd make it. My run was all geared toward breaking an hour. I wold have a go at 21 just to see if I could make it. That's the next challenge. Not 34! I'm envious though.

As long as you don't jump up in distance too greatly you should be able to progress to 21k steadily with no issues. I think rule of thumb is 10% extra distance per run.

I was the same as you 3 years ago, training for city-bay and that first time 12kms was awful! But now I am running 40-60kms a week on trails with approx. 1000m of elevation gain over the week and running trail ultra marathons and I feel better now running these distances than I did back then

It helps (for me) if you have an event to train for...makes the training seem worthwile! This is my next race (50km event)

While the evidence is there that moderate exercise is good for health and promotes brain cell regeneration, there is also growing evidence that extreme exercise does the reverse for both.

I'd only read an article on the subject a few days before I learned that my old school friend Brenton Norman had died at 69, recently, after suffering Parkinson's Disease for over 4 years and and a gradual dementia over the last 2 or 3.

I'd seen him at a few reunions before he became too ill to attend, and went to his funeral.

nah age doesn't matter mate, as long as you enjoy it!
first 12 months I was only running flat roads, then I was introduced to trails (Belair NP, Shepherds Hill, Cleland NP, Sturt Gorge etc) and it improved the road running times dramatically.

I do the bulk of my training around Aberfoyle Park/Flagstaff Hill. Nothing much flat around here.

If you can run decent times up n down hills, you can kill in the flat

I used to be right into the running going from a bloke who weighed in at 106 kegs and couldn't run 150m without blowing up to cracking two hours in the Gold Coast Half Marathon a few years back. My goal then was to run a Marathon before I was 50 but about a year ago bits of my knee cracked off and floated around inside the joint until it locked up. Nice and painful I must say.

So it was in for Knee Op number two but I didn't recover in seven days like I did when I was 30. This was in June last year. I couldn't straighten my knee until about April of this year because I did the same phsyio at 49 as I did at 30, i.e. none. Big mistake and a trap for not so young players. I tried to run again even though my knee couldn't straighten but all that did was smash up my calves, not a good look for a middle aged man.

When my knee straightened after some 'sleeping physio' I went back on the track. I was tentatively running 1200, 1600 finally 2k runs and beginning to build from there. I'm up to 6.5ks now and my son runs with me, he's up to 3.6. This week we are both going in the Ipswich 'Park2Park' event which is only 5ks but quite a challenging course for amateurs and professionals alike. As the old cliché goes though, I'll be a winner just for getting to the start line. I'm pretty happy because I thought my running days are over. Next year will be the serious PB tilt but on the 31st I'll be happy to just get out there and soak up the sun and being 'mobile' again.

regards,

REB

Nice work REB. I mostly run trails and the demographic is much older out there...very common for 50+ age group. I think doing the trails allows the stability muscles to develop around the knees and ankles which helps a lot.
Good to see you back out there.

Well done REB. To have gone from a ton plus to sub 2 hour HM is huge.

I'm getting back into some running after a few years off. I ran a HM about 6 or 7 years ago... Then needed a miniscus clean out of the left knee. Sounds similar to what you had done. Basically the knee would lock up. Hurt big time. Anywho... I participate in my local parkrun most Saturdays... Only 5 k and very social. But enjoyable for an older chap (50 soon) like me... Been years since I have done the City Bay... Not sure I will make the start line this Sept either. Like to get back to longer distances... But I now struggle with calf injuries... They call that the old man injury! My ankles are fairly dodgy as well, I strap them before every run, just to hold me together!

Yep calves are a pain as you get older. Some tips for them, do calf raises religiously and stretch, stretch, stretch. Also increase your distance using the 10% rule.

Yes I'm very slack in the stretch warm up side of things. I do a couple of calf drops/raises before I run. That's about it. They give me more trouble in cold weather. Summer time I get by.

Or have surgery on your ankles. 2 years on I'm still dealing with calf related issues

Calves & ankles held together this morning. I have been nursing them through my 5 k runs the past 3 weeks. Got back to a sub 30 minute time which is of course not quick by any stretch. Long way off my PB, but feeling a bit stronger in the last 1.5k's was nice.

Got my 5k time back to 28.30 this morning. Heading in the right direction, particularly given the strong head wind in the last 1.5 k. Hoping for sub 28 in the next few weeks.
