Eeek! Mice!

Postby Pseudo » Thu Jul 26, 2007 11:12 pm

Chez Pseudo is suffering a mouse plague at present. We've caught 4 of the buggers this week alone (one of them within a couple of minutes of setting the trap), and there are still more at large. Our back veranda is enclosed: it's not exactly a room, 'coz it's walled in, but the walls are thin and there are gaps at ground level. The mice have been partying in there during the day; the ground within is covered in mouse turds.

The next door neighbours have chooks, which is obviously conducive to mice, and the gardening has gotten away from me during the winter wet season, meaning the strip of yard between our back veranda and the neighbour's fenceline is overgrown. My immediate task (read: when the weather is fine and the Bays aren't playing) is to clear the overgrowth and block up the entry points, as far as it is possible. In the meantime I've been setting traps and baits all over the shop. Thus far the most reliable method of mouse removal has been Mrs. Pseudo; she has developed a fine art out of catching mice in one of the daughter's boots and then tipping it into an empty coffee jar.

So, goodpeople of safooty.net, give me your hints and tips for discouraging mice, and for catching or killing the suckers if they do get in anyway. What's the best way to get rid of a mouse?

(the obvious smart-aleck answer is "clear him to play for Glenelg", which worked for Westies  )

Be very interested myself in the answers. Have other pets so don't want to poison them (most of the time anyway). What is the best way????

be careful with baits in the roof we had one of the little blighters cark it in the wall cavity stunk up the house for a good month or so... needed a pest dude to get in the roof and deodorise to make it smell half decent :( we found traps worked the best and most importantly plugging up all the entrance ways (we were recommended to use steel wool) worked for us.... we developed this problem when building began on a vacant block across the road - ot between 30 year old houses... apparently thid was a contributing factor

We rented a house on a dairy farm at Mylor just before we left SA. We picked up a young Siamese cat at the local cattery - she killed and ate 5 in her first 45 minutes in the house!

She's still with us and eyes the possums and occasional wallaby that appear outside appraisingly...

we've got em' only see one of them at night, running out of the kitchen.

they get out and in by going through the heater!!!! the gas heater on the bottom has a little opening all the way along in which they get in and out that way.

If you live in SEAFORD be worried, they have had a mice plague for years, they get into the food especially at the Seaford Shopping Centre.

we will try mouse traps, one day...................

Mouse traps have always worked for when I have encountered the same problem. uncooked bacon seemed to entice more visitors to the trap than cheese as well.

Leave the dead ones on the neighbours porch, with a note about their stinky chooks.

Agree with Lunchcutter about the steel wool...they can't eat through it. Apparently they hate the smell of pepermint. So a few drops of pepermint oil on cotton wool placed next to where they get in and out can help especially if you have kids or pets and don't want to use poisons.

I like the peppermint solution. And yes, the steelwool does work.

We had a bit of a mouse problem last winner - we have farmland behind our house. Ultimately I think we caught about 20 of them in the roof, kitchen, car port and loungeroom over a month.

Initially I tried cheese, then peanut butter, then almonds - none of which worked, as the mice had figured out how to get the food without releasing the trap.

However, once I glued the almonds to the traps, that seemed to work, as they had to really pull hard to get the almond off. Believe it or not, some did manage to remove the almond - but in most cases we trapped them.

All good advice, people. From where do I get peppermint oil - at a reasonable price?

Punky, if you receive a PM from me in a week or two, it will only be because the mice have beaten me
