A BURST water main has closed a major arterial road for up to 24 hours, leaving Adelaide motorists facing a day of major chaos and frustration.
South Rd at Mile End, between London Rd and Richmond Rd, was expected to be closed for 24 hours after the main burst shortly after 9pm.
The water bubbled up through cracks, tearing the bitumen and flooding over footpaths and down drains near James Congdon Drive, north of Richmond Rd.
United Water staff turned off the water shortly after 10pm.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the road, part of one of the state's major transport routes and heavily used by commuters, traffic to and from the airport, and public buses.
Police last night said southbound traffic would be diverted via Deacon Ave and Richmond Rd and that vehicles heading north would be diverted via Manchester St and Railway Tce. Major delays are expectred throughout the day, including during both morning and afternon peak periods.
