LIVING IN THE UK

Anything!

Postby MagicKiwi » Wed Mar 21, 2007 12:30 pm

I also lived in London in the mid 80s. I lived in Shepherds Bush before it became the new Earls Court (which I believe it is now). Back then it was Aussie/Kiwi free and I was able to live like a local. I worked in Swiss Cottage which is one tube stop away from Lords :) I've been back many times since to catch up with friends and things don't seem to change that much.

Too many pubs, clubs and eateries to remember.

Lived in Queens Park and West Hampstead late 90s.
Both top drawer and I would assume pretty pricey these days.
Quality lifestyle at that time. Wouldn't live there now (have kid/s) unless I was on spectacular money.

You can play off the teaching agencies for more money. They all offer around the same, but most will match the daily rate of others. Also you can work for some agencies where after doing so many days work, they give you about $1000 AU bonus etc.
You can If you believe you can

Cheeky. I have thought about Surrey, just depends whether I could handle the commute each day.

The price shouldn't be too much of an issue - hoping to earn some good coin! I just want to live in an area that doesn't require an anti-aricraft gun to be carried around at night.

Apparently there are upwards of 200,000 aussies living in London at any one time. That's a LOT of aussises! I've heard the accent works a treat in Canada. It's like bees to the honeypot!

Nothing worse. Your choice whether you want to travel half way around the world only to run into a bunch of drunken Dazzas and Shazzas in a London pub. Recommend wide berth. Just my opinion.

Yep, agreed MK. Went to walkabout in Glasgow for a night when living in the UK a few years ago, never went to another walkabout (or any other 'aussie' themed place) again. Go to a real pub and chat with the locals.

I remeber reading in a Ralph mag a few years back that said the walkabout was the place to go in the UK.

I've heard mixed reports from people I know. I guess it's like anywhere though - depends on the night you go.

Certainly wont be going to any of the wanky clubs over there that charge 30 quid just to get in!

No point going to any pub (or club if your that way inclined) where you need to pay to get in. Might as well go somewhere else and spend that money of beer.

Im looking at going over with three others from uni. One of them went to the UK last year on a tour thing, said the Aussie pubs were brilliant on Australia Day, but other non-nationallity based pubs were better at other times.

If I go to an Aussie pub over there and hear Men At Work paying out Australians, I'll get really pissed off. Cant beleive how stupid people can be to like that song.

My brother-in-law is in England (Lancaster) at the moment and had Australia Day at a Walkabout there - they played no Aussie music! They had to spend half an hour begging the DJ to play Khe Sahn. Then he played half and ripped it off again!

But the place can't be too bad - my B-i-L now works there.
He says they don't even have any footy guernseys hanging on the wall.

You cant have an Aussie pub with no footy guernseys? My Port (Magpies and Power) guernseys will go with me everywhere I go.

Something Im keen to do while in the UK, teach primary school kids there footy (and get them supporting Port!!)

My mate is teaching in Scotland now, and has a Sturt guernsey hanging on the wall in his classroom. Even if he's just relieving for a day, the guernsey goes up.

Good work mate - spread the love!

Those poor Scotts - they are perennial underachievers anyway, so they don't need to start following Sturt!

One of my goals in my travels is to have a photo in my Port and Mt Lofty jumpers at every major landmark I go to. I'll be like the cliche Japanese tourist but without the high pants, slip-on shoes, shirt tucked in with a Nikkon camera round my neck - it'll be all footy jumper, boardies and thongs (yes thongs - they're not called 'flip-flops- you crazy poms!!) for me.

I'll give that song credit for one thing - During the world cup when Aus were playing, that song got cranked out just before the game in the Coopers Ale House and got everyone pumped as. And after we beat Japan it got a flogging as well.

Lived in New Malden in 1992 - it's between Wimbledon and Richmond. Would recommend any of these three based on my 1992 experiences (I'm assuming nothing has changed). Think you had to catch a bus to get to Wimbledon tho as opposed to the tube.

Grenwich village is also very nice.
