It’s a very condensed airspace for a small, but extremely busy airport.

US airbase (where Marine One lives) just across the river, plus very close proximity to the White House, Pentagon, and Capitol Hill.

Never been to the states but going this year on way to Caribbean for cricket. Probably only a week or two at this stage and Washington is on the list.

But yes a very busy area for air traffic with numerous military bases nearby. Added to that is navigation can be a pain as to prevent flying directly over houses at night they have to pretty much fly along the river and then make a 30 degree turn at the last minute on approached to the runway to line up.

Yes, I noticed that about the approach from the media reports … line up along the river to runway 01 , then veer to the right to land at 33.

I was in DC April 2023. We flew in from the opposite direction but it is crazy busy there and you can see that when on the ground walking around the city, the amount of black hawks continuosly zooming around the city with the airport just across the river as well, as mentioned in previous posts - surprising it hasn't happed prior.

I think they are extremely fortunate it happened over the river too, i know the planes take that path (with good reason now), but it could have easily been much worse hitting populated areas

Like it needs to be more difficult to navigate.

I used to have to go pick the missus up from 60 Light Square (eastern side), pull out (and of the carpark) to try and get to the inside lane to be able to meander across to exit heading north back on to Morphett Street at 5:05pm, 3 sets of lights and a bunch of crazies in peak hour.
