Definition of 'Official'

Postby JAS » Thu Jan 03, 2008 8:54 pm

Please could someone let me know what exactly makes an announcement 'official'.

I, and others, were not attempting to start a discussion we were requesting validation of a supposedly official signing to our club. I checked the NFC, SANFL, Kangaroos, AFL, and Tiser sites and found nothing to back up an announcement from an Eagles supporter. I think we were fully justified in requesting that he provide evidence to prove his statement. I assume that because the list was updated with the information either the posters word is beyond reproach or those updating have evidence to back up his claim.

I am not saying that anyone is lying and the signing may well be true...just asking for proof.

Rant over...for now

Regards
JAS

Depends in what context.
For eg the Official Ins and Outs topic is the official ins and outs topic for this site so people know where to look as there's a few going, you'll notice on the cricket site there's an official Brad Hogg Apology thread. Its a common term used on the net to direct people to the one thread as opposed to many.
As stated previously, if you have any queries about someone's info pm them or start a topic about it, its not hard.
From experience most info which people put their name to comes true, going on previous years I'd say 95-97% turns out to be correct, a much better hit rate than the Channel 9 news!
If you want to start a discussion about a player/recruit feel free to start a topic about him or pm the person in question, surely its not hard to not start a discussion on one topic when requested?
If people are lying they'll soon be found on here but its a rarity.

PS You assumed incorrectly. :D
As stated on the actual thread, people complain that they have to wade through dozens of page to work out where info comes from, eliminating discussion from that 1 thread makes those people happy.

PPS There's already a topic on the SANFL board entitled 'your sides ins & outs for 2008' which is 26 pages long chock full of dicussion for those who love to have a natter about recruits.

JAS asked a question and I thought it had been answered pretty clearly. :?

What's silly?
The fact that some pepole want one thread for just the recruit news and another for discussion on recruits so they can flip through and see who's going where and where the info came from straight away?
I didn't think of it originally but when it was brought up I think that's fair enough as not everyone spends the same amount of time on here sifting through posts like I and others do.

IMHO it would be silly having 2 threads with discussion (especially one that asks for no discussion) as you'd just be turning those people off again. Try to think of everyone, as the current format caters for all as opposed to some.

The only difference to previous years is we've got it as a sticky instead of a web page as its a lot easier to update by all the mods/admin as opposed to waiting on me to change it and upload it when I can. The honesty system has worked superbly in the past too with the speed of news coming to this site before being anywhere else being quite extraordinary.

PS You'll find that most recruits are on here berfore the NFC, SANFL, Kangaroos, AFL, Tiser and other sites. Usually first with the news here. Those sites check here to get their news. If we waited till recruits were named some other sites it wouldn't be worth starting the topic till June!

Thanks for the response Wedgie.

I have, as suggested, started a new thread on the subject of Dave Trotter. Although as I said I was never attempting to start a discussion I just wanted him to validate his statement.

Personally, I realise now that the term "Official" is to be applied to the thread, and does not necessarily apply to "official announcement". That is where people seem to have been misled - myself included.
