My initial post was referring to times when people use the word champ in the "wrong spirit", in a sarcastic manner, same with buddy or pal when used by someone you dislike. I have no problem if it's someone i know saying it to me.

Yeah, but that's the problem, so many people take it in the "wrong spirit" when its not meant that way, just take anything as its said, if someone calls you a champ accept it as a compliment, if you don't its your issue not theirs.
Im sick and tired of people that take compliments of statements of endearment the wrong way.

Im 22 and I call near on everyone Champ, especially if I cant remember their names. Or sometimes when I see an older man I know, I say "G'day Young Man" :D

That might be it, Im shocking with names, so champ or mate comes out all the time.

I agree with LBT here, on occassions you can tell someone is using it to be a smart arse. Generally someone you don't know that well or someone from an opposition football club. I get the same feeling, don't call me champ....
