I dont think its unlicensed operators causing the problems, JAS, lets just say there are certain "cultural" issues within Adelaide's (and probably Australia's) taxi system.

Funny they should be the first 'trade' you thought of. There's a fair few problems here atm with taxi drivers - only usually they are demanding rather than receiving offers, and plenty are being referred to the police as a result.

The % of demanding as to receiving offers would be 1% if that.
Mind you if you read the Advertiser and believe everything they say when they're on one of their 'blitzes' I can understand why you'd be confused and would think otherwise.

I had a mate who drove taxis at nights while he was going through Uni. He reported often getting offers of payment in "kind" rather than money, but said "You wouldn't touch most of them with a 40 foot pole!"

I am not sure about the state by state licensing requirements for taxi drivers, but here in Melbourne you get some pretty dodgy ones [and some good guys] driving them. The guys who own the cabs and licenses hire whoever they can get to keep them on the road, and a taxi driving licence isn't has hard to get here as in the UK. Many in Melbourne need you to direct them to where you want to go - they have no idea.

As for the copper... "Now I just want you to blow in this special bag darlin' "

I've known a couple of taxi drivers in my time. Both are good for stories, however most are about either fare evaders or pissed-as-a-fart passengers. One of them was once bailed up in Light square and offered a blow job in return for a lift to Goolwa - yes, Goolwa. He drove off while the "person" was still hanging on to the door. The other bloke still drives taxis and is a real pushover; reckons he's often given free rides (from point A to point B, you dirty minded people) to young ladies who have claimed not to have the fare. Neither of them has ever accepted payment with the hairy chequebook.

The girls I knew from school all used to wear shirt skirts doing their P's driving test. The old fella had a reputation for passing those that showed a bit of leg......
