Excuse my ignorance but was is the significance of 12 noon on Anzac Day.
I always thought the important stuff was predawn and the march but I assume there's some significance to midday which I'm ignorant of?

Usually noon gives the diggers (or Sons/daughters and so forth) to have a chat and beer before going to the footy or have a little shop or sleep, or whatever takes their fancy. Why do you think that the reserves play at noon and the league game at about 3pm for?

I wasn't being a smartarse, I thought there might be a genuine significance to 12 noon.
Well, if the only reason the footy starts at noon is to give the diggers a chance to get there (which would be less than 1% of them) then there should be no issue with shops being open as obviously pubs are allowed to be.
It'd be hypocritical to have pubs open for diggers to drink booze at but not coffee shops or restaurants for them to have a coffee at.

I march as an ex serving member (and current part timer) and I couldnt care less when
the shops are open
I enjoy the march through town, the crowds lining the streets are great and heaps of them
as well
then off to the Union in Waymouth St for a great afternoon of fun and friviolity :D :D

but other than that, I dont know the significance of noon either

Anzac Day is a great day and THE day in Australia IMHO.
I've been to the Union a few times on Anzac Day and saw the piper's get on the bar and start playing.
I've also been lucky enough to be in 1 march myself because I was in a marching band as a kid (yep, that's right, I was the Tuba/Sousaphone player).
Nothing like it.

Shopping is a great aussie tradition so I'm all for shops opening if they want to. Glad I dont work in the retail sector though.
What time am I allowed to mow my lawn on ANZAC day?
Too fast to live, too young to die.
