Public Holidays - Melb Cup?

Anything!

lol@comparing something that's 144 years old to something that's 10 years old. I could be going out on a limb but I'd say the thoroughbred industry has brought a little more to this state than motor racing has and its bad enough that the V8s are over 2 days as far as racing goes, it should be one like Bathurst.
The racing industry would probably do better if Adelaide Cup was on a weekend so more interestaters would bet on it.
But I do agree that neither deserve a public holiday, I'd prefer to have Melbourne Cup off, in fact I usually do anyway! :D

Has to be.

Something like 3 - 4 times as many people go to the Clipsal then the Adelaide Cup...

And that's just the Thursday!

What was the crowd at the Adelaide Cup?

15,000?

Exactly, and the Adelaide Cup gets a public holiday so everyone can go, Clipsal 500 does not, but still gets somthing like 70,000 on the friday.

Hmm.. I might go to a 3-day event horse trial, but you wouldn't get me near a Clipsal 500. I went to Adelaide's last Grand Prix only because my wife and I got free tickets, and it was the last one, and an acquaintance wanted us to come... We would have continued going to Oakbank regularly when we lived nearby, had it not been for the drunken yob-fest it had been turned into. [Yes I had an interest in horses and equestrian training at one time.]

On the other hand when we lived in Adelaide, and later the hills, we went to all the ABC concerts, the Opera season, and some live plays. We paid for one of the pipes on the then new organ at the Adelaide Town Hall, and supported the Art gallery, OperaSA, and the Zoological Society.

Same old problem - we all have different priorities... and who is to say which group's priorities should be scrapped. Should we just go with majority taste or should we offer educational opportunity.....?? :? :(

I say this as I work for a company with locations in NSW and VIC.And I have a chuckle when I over hear my team leader fielding questions like why do you have a public holiday .When interstate workers can not understand why we didn't work the day before.
Mind you the Day before and the Day after the melb cup (or any public )are hectic work wise form Victoria .

Cheers

Why should SA have a public holiday for a race in Victoria. There should be a public holiday for November 11 and should wipe a public holiday earlier in the year.

Maybe so, but you're looking with blinkers on. How much money goes on betting and social events on Adelaide Cup.Maybe less attendance, but i'd be interested to see what makes more profit.....

Well the state Gov makes about $30 million from the clipsal 500 each year, i wouldn't have a clue how much they make out of the Adelaide cup, but i seriously doubt it is anywhere near that figure, but i could be wrong.

You did not understand what I meant .
I meant the Adelaide cup (and other cup races like Perth) should be moved to the same day as the Melbourne cup.then we would all be on a PH on the one day .
As I work for a company in a service industry with many branches in Vic and NSW .this would at least stop the employees interstate ringing and complaining that they could not contact the distribution centre due to one state having a PH and the rest of oz not.
Thats all I meant .

Is that profit after expenses or is that what they take over the 4 days?? The tab is a major funder of the government and you work out how many tab's there are around South Australia.... Mind you I beleive this should not come into consideration.

Also if you ran the Perth,Adelaide and Melbourne Cups on the same day it would be a disaster for the SAJC. Firstly Melbourne Cup day generates 10-15,000 at Morphettville which is not too bad so then they would lose money for combining the both. Secondly we would get the scraps of any horses in Australia because of the busy schedule of group 1 races in Melbourne during that time (Cox Plate,Caulfield Cup,Derby Day,Oaks Day,Melb Cup ect.). The Adelaide Cup struggles to get name horses here in the first place as it is only a Group 2 race, but putting it on the same day as the Melbourne Cup would be suicidal.

As I said it was just a thought .You must remember I work for a company that goes in to panic when
A there is a public holiday
B any one worker is off rostered or sick .

Just don't expect the government to fund any of it. They'll try to "Make the Rich Pay!" and the rich will leave the country for good, or just stop employing anyone but family.

Think yourselves lucky you don't opperate the system they have in Scotland...we have bank, public and local holidays...look  The local holiday dates differ between each town/village and are usually only announced to the local community...makes visiting a nearby other places for shopping interesting and frustrating at times (even the next village)

Q. What is the difference between a bank holiday and a public or local holiday?

A. It is important to draw a distinction between bank holidays, and public or local holidays in Scotland. As the dates for bank holidays are set out in statute or are the subject of proclamation, it follows that they are the same across the whole of Scotland. On the other hand public or local holidays in Scotland are determined by local authorities, based on local tradition (not statutory authority) and after consultation with local business interests.

There is no legal or statutory definition of public holiday in the United Kingdom and it is questionable whether public holidays exist in Scotland. The term is often confused with bank holidays. In England and Wales a bank holiday tends automatically to be a public holiday, in that the majority of people have the day off and the day is generally observed as a holiday. In Scotland this is not always the case.

Please contact your relevant local authority for information on local or traditional holidays.

Q. Are holidays in Scotland different to the rest of the United Kingdom?

A. Yes. It is a long tradition in Scotland for people to take advantage of the local holiday closures in their home areas to visit other parts of the country for the day. This tradition appears to be welcomed by retailers and providers of leisure activities as it offers extra trading opportunities which would be denied on a general holiday.

I would also think over all TAB would get more for the State Gov than the Clipsal 500, but the Adelaide Cup alone? i dont think so.

On radio on 774 AM today I heard a rep of the betting industry say that horse racing is a vastly larger money earner than whatever comes second now, but he said other sort betting may catch up eventually.

I wasn't paying a lot of attention, but I think he said that when you add it all together racing is virtually a 7-day a week activity with something like 32 meetings a week around tha country, and 8 AFL matches at weekends just don't compete.
Presumably once a year events would pale into insignifigance.
