Mrs tigersupporter never drank either, which was also good for me, until we had some pommy friends stay with us for a couple of weeks, and they dont mind a drop or 2 or 3 or..(you get what i mean), and now she has been corupted so much that I now have to watch what I drink when we are out, in case I have to drive.

Number 1 son drives now too, and that is also good for me. :D ....

Well for what it's worth this is the great Scottish Parliament answer to the problem...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7458102.stm

Hate to but have to agree with the Tory MP who says more licencees should be prosecuted for selling the stuff to them. I've never heard of a pub, club or shop around here losing it's licence for selling to under-age drinkers. Also think the kids themselves should be procecuted too...most of the time I believe the police just take the drink and pour it away in front of them. They are breaking a law so prosecute and issue a hefty fine that will hurt their pocket to them and/or their parents...stop the slapped wrist/don't do it again approach.

JAS

Police don't want to do the paperwork because they are to busy, there are not enough judges and magistrates and the courts are flat out, so they all take the easy way out, and slowly the problem builds. More serious crimes don't attract gaol terms because it costs too much to keep the serious crims off the streets.... and so on.

Then come the weird [but inexpensive] "solutions" that don't really work, like "targeted" price rises. So addicts steal to pay the higher prices and round and round we go!

There is a conundrum popular in medical circles and I think it may have come up in a Geoffrey Robinson's Hypotheticals show.

You need urgent surgery and there are only 3 surgeons available.
One is an alcoholic, one is a Valium addict, and one uses Heroin.
Who is your best bet?

For those who haven't heard it do you want to guess or have the answer supplied?

Trick question?

The one that uses heroin. The other two are addicts and likely to be under the influence. As you've stated the other only uses heroin and isn't addicted (yet) he's less likely to be stoned.

The Heroin user is the least impaired so long as he [or she] isn't currently in withdrawal.
The other products cause more impairment of judgement and coordination even when not in withdrawal.
With them in withdrawal - in all cases you'd be better doing it yourself with a local anaesthetic and a mirror!

While some claim to be able to use Heroin and not get addicted, the regular user almost certainly is - I should have said "addicted to Heroin" avoid that confusion.
[There have been cases of people going into physiological withdrawal after one use, though it usually takes several.]

All the opioids including codeine and synthetic ones like d-propoxyphene [in Digesic and Doloxene] and Pethidine [and its anti-diarrhoea relative Lomotil] are rapidly addictive.
