SALVATION ARMY - today tonight

Only very briefly saw this story on Today Tonight friday night.

It was regarding people working at Salvation Army stores, either stealing or buying goods at a cheap price and then they would buy it themselves. Presumably to sell either on e-bay or local markets at a higher price making a profit.

I do stand to be corrected but in Vic the boss wanted to stop all of this happening but in NSW he didnt seemed to fazed by it all. Not too sure if this happens locally but one may suspect that it would.

Just appears that some staff are taking full advantage of people who are donating items for charity, for people who need them and yet these people in the middle are making money out of it and the people that need these items dont ever see them.

I definately know this has occured in SA. A handy profit to be made . Would suggest that there may be a tiny monority of volunteers with their own agenda when it comes to donated items.

this has been going on for 10 years at least that I know of.
A (former) mate's (cow of a) girlfriend worked at St Vinnies in town.
They would drive straight from St Vinnies to this fashion shop & sell the clothes.
Presumably, they probably didn't pay for them either.

I've seen her (Katie Collins) reporting on ch 9 news, she aint too shabby at all.

Pretty big job for a reporter in their early 20's to do a job like this though, will be interesting to see how she goes with the pressure against an established program.

Interesting times
Friends of mine have told me that a Pacific Island mob have been dropping off bags to people in the Northern suburbs for donations to Islanders who need clothing etc
It was a fairly extensive campaign in the Para Hills/ Mawson lakes areas and maybe other areas

As some of you may be aware I am a "Salvo", I do wear the uniform most Sundays when I attend the Corps at Golden Grove.

My take on this issue and its the opinion of many Salvos is that this is what happens when the organisation tries to wear two hats, one of being a religious organisation, the other being a business run for profit.

I am not at all keen on the Salvation Army running programmes like "Employment Plus" and "Red Shield Housing" as both of these represent work that would be taken up by other groups if the Salvation Army did not win the contracts to do it. What you may not be aware of is that if you work as an officer in the Salvation Army you are paid the same wage irrespective of your position, hence the Managing Director of Employment Plus makes the same wage as the local Salvation Army minister which causes the organisation to easilly win contracts from the government by being able to undercut other job providers and groups that manage governments housing stock as a co-operative as Red Shield does.

Years ago the Op Shops were run by local Salvo churches and we run a lot better, its all be corporatised now and things are much different, although perhaps the one positive about the current system is that along with Vinnies, the Salvos are one of the biggest employers of ex Prisioners who cant get a job anywhere else and really do want a fresh start.

I feel that it is all a case of trying to shut the gate once the horse has bolted. We need to get out of a number of things that we are doing and get back into our core business which is being a church albeit one with a focus on social justice issues including welfare and the like.

Still there are a number of people involved in the Salvos who feel the same way, so hopefully it will come to pass, the current situation seeing the way Red Shield shops represent the Salvation Army makes me feel both embarrassed and ashamed and I do hope that it can be dealth with appropriately if we are to "save face" as an organisation!

Sojourner, although I am not involved in the Salvation Army myself, I have always felt an affinity because my parents were in the Army at Hindmarsh, and as a child I had some involvement in the church.
I still have the Cornet, my father played in those days. The corporatisation of recent years has saddened me and turned me off to some extent, and the aggressive guilt-inducing style of advertising for donations that followed that change did so too. I share your hope that the Salvation Army moves back towards it roots.

In the meantime, my donations to charity have tended to go the St Vinnies, and the Little Sisters of the Poor, following my wife's affinities.

Interesting that your parents were involved at the Hindmarsh Corps Psyber, the Hindmarsh Corps is now located at Kilkenny actually in the old Coles Supermarket on the fringe of Arndale Shopping Centre, the Corps is actually called "Arndale"!

What is interesting is that Arndale Corps for at least the last two years has easilly been the fastest growing Salvation Army Church in Adelaide and it is in an older area where churches usually go backwards rather than forwards! They have a street ministry amongst the girls that work on Hanson Rd and they are working with the refugee community in the area which has resulted in massive numbers of new people attending. Arndale was put together from the amalgamation of Kilkenny and Renown Park (Hindmarsh) yet going on current numbers they are looking at having to re-plant it back again! - The Brass Band is a very strong one with a high membership which proves popular with a number of new people who enjoy participating!
