Ankle Rehab?

Postby footy1992 » Mon Apr 27, 2009 10:09 pm

Has anybody got any rehab ideas for an chronic ankle injury which has been rolled three times (once majorly and twice secondary injuries) to rebuild the strength in it and get it back to as close to full fitness as possible?

i've never had any serious ankle injuries, just ya regulation rolled ankles. pretty lucky.

but all i used to do was, just while watchin tv or whatever, just have a tennis ball under my foot, and continually roll it around. i've got no idea weather this actually done anything to help the recovery, but i figured it wouldnt hurt! also, anything to do in water would be benficial

footy1992, trust me, this works!

If you're interested, I can put you onto a GP who does this for the price of a normal consult.

Crux of it is that once you've stretched the ligaments, they never un-stretch. The prolotherapy injections cause the ligament to strengthen itself, shorten and tighten up your ankle. I've had it done in my back and neck, my sister in her shoulder post car accident and many footballers who my dad has sent there by way of North Adelaide Footy club have had excellent results.

Na, but my old man does get Margaret to do most of the North folk now.

The guy I go and see is at Salisbury which is more convenient for me location wise.

Grab a bike tyre tube and secure one end near the floor (leg of a bed or heavy table worked for me). Sit down and put your foot in the other end of the tube, so that the tube is pulled tight. Flex your foot backwards, pulling on the tube.

Wobble boards also work well if you have access to one.

Does he charge similar to Marg? Treatment can end up being fairly costly.

Stand on one leg.....the one with the bad ankle.
Close your eyes....you will lose balance and begin to wobble, like being on a wobble board.
5 minutes 4 times a day.
No money, can be done anywhere and it works. Be careful at the start as you may fall over :D

Wobble boards are pretty advanced and if you're not quite strong enough yet, they can do more damage.

Duradiscs are much better, I get rehab clients to have their heel on the centre of one and their toes on the solid ground for stability and do squats from that position. Builds up strength around the joint and helps increase proprioception to try and prevent a re-occurrence.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

he does require you to do a double booking because the treatment can go into the 2nd 1/4 hour. However the cost is that of a GP visit minus reimbursement (ie, about $25)

There was a bloke at Dernancourt who went under. He was charging approx $2000 for a full course treatment. With the guy at Salisbury it would've cost about $200 max.

Marg is expensive, $200 for the first visit. I never ended up going through with the injections (which would have been in my groin  ), because I had started to see some improvements from the longer term work I had been doing for the injury.

I think if I ever decide to go down the path I will be PMing you for the Salisbury contact though.
