Mitcham Council crackdown on cats

Postby dedja » Thu May 28, 2009 12:17 am

I must confess I've never been a cat lover, but have no problem with responsible cat owners who do the right thing.

... but I do hate the cats roaming the neighbourhood at night causing mayhem.

I think the new cat laws by the Mitcham Council are great ... http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/stor ... 01,00.html

I'm a dog owner and think it's responsible to register, microchip and de-sex them and to ensure that they are neighbourhood friendly.

Why should a cat be any different?

Anyhow, what do you think?
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

I’m only the administrator of the estate of dedja … my yes be yes, my no be no

The tougher the better, 90% of cat owners are irresponsible and IMHO they should be banned as pets as theyre a pest.
If everyone behaved like the responsible 10% then there would be no issue. (and 10% is generous)

And to those 90% of the owners don't complain if your cat comes onto my property and gets a sore tummy and dies, its your fault not mine!

I 'own' two cats, yet I have a deep seated hatred for their species.

1 was given to my ( at the time ) 2 year old daughter ( now 8 ) by my Mother-in-law as a gift,of course she didnt ask either me or Mrs.Boon.
So you can imagine I do little in the way of care for this animal.

The second we 'adopted' ( Mrs.Boon did without asking me ) when we purchased our currect property. The previous owners of the house/cat were off in a winnebago around the land and we 'adopted' the 10 year old half blind- once run over- rat killer.

I hate them both and have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me, I do not, and will not allow them inside so they roam the neighbourhood and I couldnt care any less what people think becasue, although they live in my yard and get fed by people in my house they are not my cats and the sooner I have the chance to bury either or both the better. Mrs.Boon knows me feelings on them and ensures they dont cross paths with me,I would never hurt them or be cruel to them but the sooner they are out of my life the better.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Chk...Chk...BOOM !

When we moved to Lockleys, my wife had two cats. One disappeared into the Torrens (on it's own accord), and the other one
we kindly donated to my Father in Law.

As I tell my kids. A good cat is a dead cat.
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Good analyses there Wedgie with the 10%/90% ....lol

I hope I come under the 10% O:)

I have two cats, both desexed, both get 'locked up' in the laundry every night and not left to roam.
They don't tend to 'leave home' during the day, but prefer to sit on the roof and watch the world go by.
Or sleep in the warmest/favourite spots they can find in the backyard
My daughter is a 'cat whisperer' I'm sure they think she is their mother
My husband would also like to 'be gone' of them, but there's no way I could do that to my daughter.

I hate it when in the middle of the night the 90% cats start fighting in the street and therefore causing every dog in the neighbourhood to bark

I also hate it when the 90% cats come over to my yard and eat my cats food

I think the idea of registering cats is a good one, but how are they going to police it??

I can see no problem with someone keeping several cats so long as all are desexed, chipped and registered, and kept indoors.
For years my wife and I lived in rural settings, enjoyed the bird-life, kept our cats totally indoors.
The last - a Siamese - went out on a lead with us sometimes, walking alongside the Irish Wolfhound.
The problem is not cats but irresponsible owners who take on a kitten, decide it is too hard to discipline it and clean up after it, and let it roam.

I agree most cat owners are irresponsible - so fine them when their chipped cat if found roaming!
I'd contend a high percentage of dog owners are irresponsible too.
Then there are the irresponsible owners of undisciplined children - perhaps the same rules should apply....

It is true... I was once told by a real-estate agent that..

"Pets are only as good as their owners"

Good owners = good pets.

Just changing the subject to dogs for a minute
Who wants to come and shut the dog up next door that has barked continously for 3 days

Next doors dog is usually very good, but for some reason, every now and then, the owners decide that he may be lonely, so they 'bring in' another dog to 'play' with him.... but all that happens is the visiting dog barks continously all day, but then when the owners come home, not a sound out of it
