The Age - SA edition.

Postby Dogwatcher » Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:55 pm

I understand that Fairfax Publications is considering printing an SA edition of The Age.
That would include SA news and sport.
Would be an interesting addition to the South Australian media landscape, depending on to what extent it enters SA's market.

Interesting as they have gone web only into the Brisbane & Perth markets with the Brisbane Times and WA Today respectively.

Good for SA if they go ahead with it.

I get The Age whenever I am in Melbourne and I used to get the Saturday version here a few years back. Would be great if an SA version was published, although I would probably never find the time to read it. :(

What happened tothe Independent Weekly which started up a few years back? Is that still around? I have a copy of the first edition somewhere. Was a far better read - more cerebral - than the 'tiser, but had an obvious pinko leaning.

They can deliver it to my house if they actually do it, I would have no problems chucking in the Advertiser if we finally got some decent competition in Adelaide!

They get the Vic Saturday Age in the Newsagency at Tea Tree Plaza and I often get it for the Football Section, well worth a read considering some of the rubbish our own Advertiser turns out and the bonus that Rucci isnt in it!

Would be a great battle to see - Advertiser vs Age! Obviously their football coverage would be where they would seek to get real market leverage initially, but for once the Advertiser may have to raise the bar with genuine competition in its own backyard!

If it eventuated I'd certainly give it a go but just can't see it happening though because News Ltd have such a stranglehold on the market here and people are bought up on The Advertiser, horrible paper that it is. I buy Thursday's Age every now and then and The Independent Weekly is still going strong which I get week in week out.

I just can't see why Fairfax would do it given the dwindling readership and the amount of money newspapers are losing these days (although not as badly here compated to the US & UK). It's a national paper but The Australian (Rupert's baby) loses money hand over fist and has less readers nationally than even The Advertiser does locally. Rupert want's to bring a paywall in for his paper's websites I assume in a move to "entice" people back to his papers. I'll stick with Crikey thanks.

I read The Age each day on the net. Only reason I purchase the Advertiser, is for the Form Guide.

I don't buy the age or the heraldsun. I get the geelong advertiser. I find it a better read and more local to Werribee than the heraldsun and Age. And the football is always great on a Friday and Monday.

Ahh, Werribee - a fabled land in the far western reaches of the Empire when I lived in Melbourne from 1999 to early 2009.

I was getting it, but the print was very small and when you enlarged the page became blurred. [I don't like my 22" monitor right under my nose.]
I concluded there was nothing much in it that I didn't pick up elsewhere and unsubscribed.
I may look at it again if they learn to supply a .pdf you can enlarge on screen.
