I hope they are as welcoming as we seem to be for Japanese immigrants, I think they have invaded us!

I fear you are quite right SD.
My old Sydney suburb 'Northbridge' is now called 'Little Tokyo' by some locals.
Last time I was there I dropped into the Japanese grocery store in Northbridge Plaza for a
friendly look-see and was made to feel very unwelcome by the owners and shoppers.
I couldn't believe it was happening to me in my own country. In my suburban Australia !
I now have a much better understanding of, and sympathy for, all peoples on the receiving
end of blatant racism.
Does anyone remember when we got to vote on immigration ?

I always remember Northbridge as being very "japanese".

Even going back as far as 1990... mind you though, back then their lollies were a treat, now you can find them anywhere!

Hmmm, I'll have to go and have a little look-see in Northbridge if I ever get the chance. Obviously some people aren't happy there. It is interesting how some people react to the local environment. While I have been living in Japan there has been a definite lack of racist behaviour toward myself. When it does happen it comes as a shock, mainly because it is so rare though.
I much more often saw Asians on the receiving end of discrimination when I lived in Australia.
There is a good chance that a lot of those shoppers, and owners in Northbridge are not Japanese. Over here people naturally assume that I am American if I am in an American bar, or that I am Italian if I go to an Italian festival, etc. The truth is that Americans have a taste for things that Australians also like so I'll get some for myself whenever the chance arises. Asians do the same in Australia. There is more chance of a Chinese or a Korean finding snacks, seaweed or the type of rice that they like in a Japanese supermarket than at Woolworths. There is a huge difference in behaviour between Japanese and other Asians though.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
