Where were you when John Hewson needed you?

BTW - well done PR. Keep up the good work.

Garlic Scallops
1 Dozen Scallops (on the shell)
2 Large cloves of Garlic
2 Teaspoons Light Soy Sauce
1 Tablespoon Oyster Sauce
1 Tablespoon Dry Sherry
1 Teaspoon Cornflour (I assume Nurses C/flour is the same thing)
1 Tablespoon of Cold Water
2 Tablespoons of Peanut Oil
1 Teaspoon of Sesame Oil

I bought scallops without shells, & grabbed prawns as well...
Finely chop garlic
Mix together- soy, oyster sauce & sherry
Have all ingredients assembled before cooking

Heat heavy frying pan & lightly grease it with peanut oil
Sear scallops (& prawns) lightly until cooked- about 30 seconds, no longer, otherwise scallops go "tough" (I put the prawns in first, gave 'em a head start)
Take them out of the pan
small amount of oil in pan, (& on low heat) add garlic & fry for a few seconds, stirring (don't let it go brown, it will go bitter)
Pour in the mixed sauces, cover for 2 mins
Stir in cornflour & water until thickens
Add sesame oil & mix, then spoon over scallops (& prawns)
19g CARBOHYDRATE (if only 12 scallops cooked)

Beef with Broccoli
250g of beef fillet
1 Large clove of Garlic (crushed- or cheat & put equal amount minced garlic)
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1/2 Teaspoon of Ginger (crushed- or cheat & put equal amount minced ginger)
1/2 Teaspoon of (Chinese) 5 Spice Powder
250g of broccoli
1 Teaspoon Cornflour (I assume Nurses C/flour is the same thing)
4 Tablespoon of Cold Water
3 Tablespoons of Peanut Oil
2 Teaspoons of Sesame Oil

Cut beef into thin strips
mix garlic, salt & ginger & rub into meat
sprinkle 5 spice powder over beef & toss in a container* to distribute
slice broccoli into small florets /in half
heat oils in wok
add beef (when hot) & constantly stir for approx 2 mins (meat should change colour)
add broccoli for 3 mins
keep stirring & tossing*
add cornflour mix to thicken
15.5g CARBOHYDRATE (excluding rice)

I also added microwaved pack of rice- you put it in microwave for 90 seconds on high- sensational.

About $4 (150g)?
I bought most of these ingredients tonight (plus some flake), I had a few condiments at home (& a wok), & I think $40 got me the whole lot (plus some stewing meat for the dog). Most of those condiments bought would make a lot of different dishes too.
Stir fry beef about $5-6
Prawns $4 (150g)

Just because they name (and copyright the name) their patties "100% aussie beef patties", it doesn't mean that's what's in it, if they are called "100% aussie beef patties" by brand name, they can call them by their brand name.

don't buy your seafood from there! make sure you go to somewhere like Angelakkis Brothers, or Samtass (on Richmond Rd)
comparison-
Woolies Dozen Oysters $14
Samtass Dozen Oysters $9 (& probably bigger)

Punk Rooster wrote:A challenge- I will not eat McDonalds, Hungry Jacks, KFC, Pizza Hut for 1 month (starting tomorrow) 16th of October - 16th of November.
I invite everone to join in. with this being a multi-faceted task- one of improving the quality of our own meals, denying our bodies of the poison these meals contain & denying our hard earned $'s to these companies for 1 month.
It might just be enough us to help break the habit of a life-time., & hopefully go beyond a month.

Well, 2 days to go, doing it with my ears pinned back...
I also achieved my other goal, & that was to eat better in general. I've had a ball learning new recipes with my wok, eating great cuts of meat & seafood, often for the same price as CORPORATE JUNKFOOD.
I will now try to extend this to 3 months.
Question, do I allow myself 1 meal at only 1 of these joints? (my preference would be for a Bacon Double Cheeseburger Meal at Hungry Jacks)
