I don't trust our elected officials to keep their promises, and I want a check on that - pollies have been known to lie for votes... ;)

If and when we become a Republic I would like to see our Coat of Arms replace the Union Jack. Minimal change. Only if and when we become a republic. If we dont, then dont.

I've always thought the Union Jack should go, but could never think what to replace it with (always thought with no better option leave it as it is), but that is by far the best suggestion I've ever heard.

Not bad actually. I wonder how it would look with a really dark green, and gold stars to match the Coat of Arms..

I always felt the same if there was nothing better on offer, and the only part i'd even consider changing is the removal of the Union Jack, IMHO it should never have been put on our flag.
The problem always was that it would look naked with nothing in the corner and I hadn't seen anything that looked the part, the boxing kangaroo is a great sports flag but not what a national flag should portray, the aboriginal flag should also be left alone, it has it's own meaning and place in our culture.

Booneys idea is great, and to carry it on further, each state that has the Union jack in the corner could do the same with their own coat of arms.

Does look good, doesn't it? As you said Ian each state could replace the the Union Jack with the respective Coat of arms for each state.

Mininal change and I would vote for it, no problems.

I would like to incorporate some Aboriginal meaning into our National Flag but agree that the Aboriginal Flag has too much value to try and fit that in on our National Flag.

You'd need to Torres Straight Islander flag too, IIRC if the Aboriginal Flag is flown the Torres Straight Islander flag should be flown along side it.

Correct, so incorporating ( perhaps ) the Coat of Arms, The Southern Cross, The Aboriginal Flag, The Torres Straight etc etc would just be too messy.

I like my idea the best. ;)

Great idea Booney!

The coat of arms (as presented on Booney's design) is too fancy for a flag, and its presence makes the federal star redundant.

So no, I don't like it :p
