My Grandfather fought against the idea of a new knee after a working life laying carpet, in his late 80's finally gave in and had both done at the same time, within a week Grandma couldn't keep up with him, now in his mid 90's he's still running around like a 40 year old.

A bloke at work fought having his knee done (late 40's) finally late last year it got the better of him, same story, running around like a teen ager now

If your knee is bad, just do it and improve your quality of life, I had a minor knee op 20 years ago, if it ever gets that bad I wont hesitate (not sure what to do about L4 and L5 though  :( )

I'm not up to date in that field, but you could check with Dr Vini Khurana in the Department of Neurosurgery at Canberra Hospital and see what he knows about back surgery and preserving nerve function, which is what frightens the Orthopaedic Surgeons off tackling them. I don't know how much Vini has done in that area, but a friend of mine flew over to have a vascular tumour in his mid-brain removed that 3 Adelaide Neurosurgeons had sad was inoperable and likely to kill him next time it bled. He's right as rain now, and Vini came over for his wedding since....

And yes, the gastric erosion from the anti-inflammatory component is a big risk - I'd resist taking them at all on that risk alone.
It is a worry.... :(

Someone I know reckons her dad can separate the codeine and get nicely off his chops without that nasty ibuprofen.

The chemists warn people to take food with it for a reason but as we know people ignore safety warnings on a regular basis. As in that article with people drinking booze with it, that's a brilliant way to fry your liver in a short amount of time.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

They tend to put them off till you are older because there is a tendency for the replacement joints to need redoing in about 15 years and they worry a second or third replacement may prove impossible when it wears. But, as I expect to live well into my 90s, or beyond, on family form, if I had a really bad knee I'd be pushing them to not leave me to put up with it so I didn't need a second or third one - I'd count on the technology improving by the time I needed it.

I said in complete deadpan mode, and at a reasonable volume:

"It's on my old fella".

You could have heard a pin drop

Many moons ago I visited a pharmacy & purchased a pack of condoms (new girl friend :D ). Young pharmacy assistant in making "small talk" asked if I was up to anything on the weekend. Old codger behind me just cracked up, pointed at the condoms as shouted "What ya reckon Love?" Gotta love privacy at pharmacies!!
