Job...

Postby nuggety goodness » Mon Apr 05, 2010 11:59 pm

well i'm getting a bit annoyed in my current position. it's not a bad job and i have pretty good conditions however i am not earning enough and it doesn't look like i'll be getting a rise anytime soon...

firstly i'm working for a friend and that makes it a little harder i think cos we have a personal friendship as well as a business relationship...

secondly he is very tight with his money...

thirdly there is no commission structure in place (still) and i have just had to negotiate overtime payments for working on weekends...

i'm getting to the point of moving on if i don't get some kind of recognition financially soon, he's admitted that bringing me on has increased business far beyond what he could do by himself and he couldn't handle it alone if i was to leave. i've been with him for 18 months now and all is still the same...

what to do?
I am not talking to you for 3 minutes because you punched me in the head and it hurt and that was not okay for you to do

difficult situation........

is there a possibility to ask for an increase in wages? - there will be the regular increase in july which i assume covers all industries...

if you leave and he struggles with the business would there be a possibility that he could come to you and ask you what you would like in terms of your conditions etc...

Ask for an increase, and if you don't receive it but think that you could elsewhere, then move on if your lifestyle benefits from the additional income.

If he's a mate and has refused to increase your remuneration, then he has had his opportunity and should understand the reason for your need to move on.

Either way, good luck with it mate.

hmmm...

no increase in the foreseeable future, until sales have hit a point that he is happy with (what that is i'll never know). my issue is that the 'sales' portion of my job is less than about half. i do all the administration, receive and send out goods, sometimes i have to deliver or pick up gear as well if it is urgent (plus couriers drive me up the wall!!!), i also pretty much project manage for him to make sure things are all in place so he can rock up at a job and everything be there, a bit like a personal assistant i guess. My house is basically a free warehouse for him too... then i do a few days a fortnight with him on location doing ad shoots or docos etc, whatever work he is hired for...

the base of clients we have is very large already so servicing them takes up most of my time (my other difficulty is the industry is very different to what i was in before so i'm still having to research and learn bits and pieces too)
so generating new business is hard to squeeze in.

if i left he would feel the full brunt of how much i actually do and maybe then he would reconsider the option but i think until i actually leave it will just continue the way it is. we have spoken many times about what could be done better but nothing changes...

my wife is the biggest catalyst in looking to change jobs, she isn't happy that our house is his warehouse and the fact that she earns more than me as a finance officer without any qualifications.

my thought is that i have to move on...

Go fishing for other jobs, see if you get any nibbles. Should give you some bargaining power with your current boss.

Ask him to define what the pay rise would be and when it would be forthcoming - get that written into your contract. If he is serious, he will do that. If he is not serious and intends to string you along because he is a tight arse then seek.com.au will be your new friend.

Move on. Friends and business are rarely a successful formula.

Best of luck.

another thing that has been forgotten about... a written contract of any type...

those are the things that he has said for me to write up and then we'll work it out from there... my thought is that it sin't my responsibility and i don't have time to muck around with it as it is...

anyway, i think my mind is made up...

Nuggety just reading that, it looks as though you have to ask for an increase and to sort out the whare-house situation, if this isnt sorted then I guess start fishing around for something else

NG, you want to hope your 'boss' doesn't come onto safooty for a look and find you're airing your dirty laundry.
I reckon it's best to keep things under your hat, look around but don't go tellinf or asking the world what you are thinking in this area, you never know who might be watching! Don't worry abut the missus earning more than you do, mine has earned more than me for twenty years, that's the "for better or worse" bit you spoke about the day you got married. ;)

Wait for the moment he needs you the most and is totally backed to the wall then threaten to walk out and take everyone else with ya.It's worked for us every 2-3 years. They buckle everytime. We had a H.R . clown from Sydney come over and say"sorry guys we will not be blackmailed and all your notices to resign will stand at 4pm at a morning meeting at 7.00am.At 3.55pm the committee were summond to the offfice and we got every cent we were asking for and all our previous award clauses re-written into the EBA agreement .The whole morning performance was a sideshow
No wonder the pricks wanted workchoices and don't want to let go. Small business utopia.
