Ethanol heaters

Postby smac » Tue Apr 20, 2010 7:32 pm

Am looking for a patio heater and am quite interested in an ethanol heater.

Does anyone have any experience with one? Is it any good? Is ethanol for a heater readily available?

Appreciate any advice.

I would think the LPG one would burn a lot cleaner, and at least you know they haven't cut down natural rain forest to plant the palms for the oil to produce the ethanol.

Nothing wrong with LPG, just the heaters that use it look like crap!

The LPG one's also burn a tonne of gas. A mate has one that burns ( at full tilt ) a 9kg bottle in just over 4 hours.

Don't they burn Methylated Spirit which is just Ethanol with some Methanol in it to make it unsafe to drink?
It possibly gives off less incompletely oxidised hydrocarbons than LPG, but I'm not sure.

He is doing something wrong or got a old one, I use mine for card nights in winter, goes from 7pm to 3am and uses less than half a 8.5kg bottle.

Yes, I have confirmed that they do burn methylated spirit. Thanks for that tip (didn't do chemistry once it became elective...)
