Hebel or Foamfast Wall Panels?

Postby Cambridge Clarrie » Thu May 13, 2010 3:10 pm

I'm looking for some advice from anyone who is either a builder or has built using either of these materials.

Our designer suggested Hebel, our builder has suggested we consider the Foamfast product.

Any help would be greatly appreciated (i.e. pros and cons of each).

Cheers guys! :D

I purchased some Foamfast architectural mouldings for a house I built and didn't have any issues. But being a wall panel, I can see issues down the track with general wear and tear from knocks and bumps as the product is very lightweight and I doubt it could take much impact without showing noticeable damage.
Personally, I wouldn't build a wall with the foamfast product.
I only purchased my mouldings from them because they are placed up high on the fascia of the house, out of reach from any potential impact.

That's interesting, because the early claims were that it was a good insulator.
The best house I ever had for that was a log cabin - it stayed cool in summer and was fairly easy to heat in winter.
The only problem was heat transfer through the windows, and keeping the summer sun off the glass.
I'd think about double glazing and external shutters, if I built a house again.

If I were to build I would be most concerned with building orientation. Taking advantage of winter sunshine and sheltering the house from blistering afternoon sun in summer.

I would also do underfloor heating and use proper Air Diffusion techniques that I have learnt about in my current position.

I will ask around about the two options Clarrie.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Absolutely Booney, with the log cabin I had thought I'd got that and the verandahs just right, as well as having no windows on the western wall.
However, the builders pulled up the pegs I had put in to guide them then turned it just slightly off line, and as a result the late afternoon summer sun just angled in through the windows on the southern side.
If they'd got it right it would have been just a little morning sun...

It wasn't as though there was an issue making it fit the block, as it was on 20 acres.

Have you considered timber frame with a blueboard exterior?

where I work, we mainly use Fastfoam or Power Panel.

But depending on where it was going and the cost difference
I think you would be pretty safe to go with the Foam
Without reading into it or knowing anything about it, I would say it has better insulation properties

good luck with it
